SMART-S Mk2 radar brings improved capabilities to French Navy anti-aircraft frigates
 
During DIMDEX 2014, one of the visiting naval ship was the French Navy Cassard class anti-aircraft frigate "Jean Bart". It was the first time we could see the frigate fitted with the new Thales SMART-S Mk2 radar. Navy Recognition took the opportunity to ask the French Navy what benefits this radar upgrade brings to the Cassard class of frigates.

A torpedo powered by a lithium-ion battery breaks speed records in complete safety
 
Early in 2013, the first sea firings of a torpedo fitted with a Li-ion battery were completed successfully: propelled completely safely at more than 50 knots, the torpedo also benefits from an endurance that can exceed one hour. It took ten years of studies, research and testing for the DCNS Saint-Tropez personnel specialised in undersea weapons, in collaboration with electrochemists from Saft*, to give practical form to this new product.

The trial, executed on 21 November 2013, consisted of four Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM) being directed by APAR to four targets. The trial was successful: all launched missiles performed a successful intercept. In the first part of the trial, a Banshee drone was eliminated by a missile launched by the new Royal Danish Navy Frigate HDMS Peter Willemoes (Iver Huitfeldt-class).

Chinese Navy (PLAN) releases First photos of Liaoning Aircraft Carrier Battle Group
 
The Chinese navy released on Wednesday the first photographs of what many military observers believe is the Liaoning aircraft carrier battle group as the nation's first aircraft carrier returned to its homeport of Qingdao, Shandong province. The photos show the Liaoning sailing with several battleships, submarines and military aircraft performing a series of drills. The navy did not disclose when and where they were taken.

ADCOM Systems unveiled the first fixed wing UAV for anti-submarine warfare at Dubai Airshow

This new UAV project is designed specifically for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW). This makes it the world’s first fixed wing UAV project dedicated to ASW missions.

From concept to fleet demonstration, this idea took less than six years to produce results at significant cost savings when compared to traditional programs often taking decades to produce results.

Subsea Tech, a designer, manufacturer and supplier of marine and underwater intervention and instrumentation systems unveiled at Milipol 2013 (the International Exhibition of Internal State Security which was held in Paris from November 19 – 22, 2013) the CAT-Surveyor, an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) designed for inland and harbor waters reconnaissance.

On runway 24 of U.S. Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland, a part of Boeing Harpoon missile history was recently witnessed when four of the proven Harpoon Block IC cruise missiles were uploaded onto a Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet to undergo a rigorous flight test over the Atlantic Ocean. The test verified flight characteristics with the quad load-out; a Harpoon first.

Interview: Lockheed Martin LRASM next generation anti-ship missile
 
AUSA (which was held from 21 to 23 October 2013 in Washington D.C) is a land warfare focused exhibition, but when we learned that a Lockheed Martin representative involved in the LRASM program was attending the event, we couldn't pass the opportunity to meet with the person and get an update on the future U.S. Navy anti-ship missile.

DCNS launch Vladivostok, Russian Navy's first Mistral class LHD
 
Vladivostok, the first of two BPC-type vessels (LHD - Landing Helicopter Dock) on order from DCNS for the Russian Federation was floated out of its building dock at STX France's Saint-Nazaire shipyard on 15 October. The event was attended by senior officials representing the French and Russian navies and shipbuilding industries. The programme has proceeded as planned since the contract came into force in late 2011, with the vessels on schedule for delivery in late 2014 and late 2015 respectively.

The site specializes in the production of submarine equipment such as torpedo tubes and torpedo handling systems. It is also the place where the FREMM frigates' vertical launch systems are produced. The focus of the visit however was the A3SM, a new anti-air defence weapon system for submarine currently under development by DCNS and MBDA.

X-47B UCAS-D First Catapult Launch from USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) a Success
 
The X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System demonstrator (UCAS-D) completed its first ever carrier-based catapult launch from USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) off the coast of Virginia today. "Today we saw a small, but significant pixel in the future picture of our Navy as we begin integration of unmanned systems into arguably the most complex warfighting environment that exists today: the flight deck of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier," said Vice Adm. David Buss, commander, Naval Air Forces, the Navy's "Air Boss".

First cut of steel for this head unit took place at the Russia’s Baltic Shipyard United Shipbuilding Corporation (OCK) in St. Petersburg in August 2012.

Key to any future operations by the carrier – the largest warship ever to sail under the White Ensign – will be sustaining her thousands of miles from home.

Commonality and similarity in DAMEN SIGMA designs
 
SIGMA 9813 and SIGMA 10513 have 100% commonality in structure, propulsion and auxiliary systems, as the 10513 version in essence is just a lengthened version and has an extra compartment of 7.20 m by a parallel section in the amidships region. This extra compartment provides added functional spaces and some alternative accommodation spaces.
