Ingalls Shipbuilding Christens Fifth U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter James (WMSL 754)
 
Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division christened the company's fifth U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter (NSC), James (WMSL 754), on August 16th in front of nearly 1,000 guests. Charlene James Benoit, great-great niece of the ship's namesake, Capt. Joshua James, is the ship sponsor. At the culmination of the ceremony, Benoit smashed a bottle across the bow of the ship, proclaiming, "May God bless this ship and all who sail in her."

French SIGINT/Intelligence ship Dupuy de Lôme entered Black Sea for the fourth time this year
 
The French Navy Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) ship Dupuy de Lôme (A 759) crossed the Bosphorus to enter the Black Sea on August 16th. This marks the fourth time the French "spy" ship is deployed to the Black Sea, an unprecedented situation. The vessel is undoubtedly deployed to monitor the events currently take place in East Ukraine.

SM-6 Missile demonstrated ability to detect and engage targets over land in latest US Navy test
 
The U.S. Navy executed a successful flight test of the surface-to-air Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) at White Sands Missile Range, Aug. 14. During flight test "Juliet," the Navy examined the missile's ability to intercept a subsonic, low altitude target over land. Juliet is one of 10 follow on operational test and evaluation (FOT&E) events planned for SM-6's missile performance and demonstration.

X-47B UCAS-D & F/A-18 combined operations onboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71)
 
The Navy's unmanned X-47B returned to carrier operations aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Aug. 17 and completed a series of tests, operating safely and seamlessly with manned aircraft. Building on lessons learned from its first test period aboard TR in November 2013, the X-47B team is now focused on perfecting deck operations and performing maneuvers with manned aircraft in the flight pattern.

Chinese Shipyard CSSC launched the first Algerian Navy C28A Corvette
 
Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC, the largest shipbuilding group in China) launched the first C82A Corvette on order for the Algerian Navy on August 16 2014. Algeria signed a contract with China Shipbuilding Trading Co (CSTC) for construction of three C82A corvettes in March 2012.

Coastal Patrol (PC) ships USS Hurricane (PC 3) and USS Monsoon (PC 4) completed their arrival to Bahrain the second week of August. Hurricane and Monsoon are the final two of 10 ships that are part of a realignment plan to increase the PC presence in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR).

Lockheed Martin, NASA and U.S. Navy Test Orion Spacecraft Ocean Recovery
 
In a simulated ocean recovery of an Orion spacecraft test article, Lockheed Martin, NASA and the U.S. Navy practiced recovery techniques for retrieving the crew module after it splashes down at sea following its first test flight later this year. This test allowed the team to evaluate procedures, hardware and personnel responsible for the recovery.

ATK's AARGM Anti-Radiation Missile Earns Third Full-Rate Production Award from U.S. Navy
 
ATK has been awarded a contract valued at $96.2 million by the U.S. Navy for the third full-rate production lot of the Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AARGM). The contract covers AARGM and Captive Air Training Missiles for the U.S. Navy and Italian Air Force.

Northrop Grumman to Provide Integrated Bridge Systems for modernized Burke-Class Destroyers
 
Aug. 6, 2014 – Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded contracts from the U.S. Navy, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works and Huntington Ingalls Industries to provide integrated bridge and navigation systems and steering gear systems to modernize Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers (DDGs).

US Navy's VP-45 squadron launched AGM-84D missile from P-8A Poseidon MPA for the first time
 
Patrol Squadron (VP)-45 Combat Aircrew Four (CAC)-4 recently completed the first P-8A Coordinated Time on Top (CTOT) AGM-84D live missile shot with a Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) P-3C crew during RIMPAC 2014. The missile shot was comprised of a P-8A-launched AGM-84D Harpoon missile and a JMSDF P-3C- launched ATM-84D Harpoon telemetry missile. The result was a successful strike against a surface target – with both missiles arriving simultaneously.

USNS John Glenn (MLP 2), successfully completed Final Contract Trials (FCT) off the coast of Manchester, Washington July 31. During the trials, the Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey along with the ship's crew tested the vessel's various hull, mechanical, and electrical systems to demonstrate that the ship meets Navy standards and requirements, and is materially ready to perform all of its slated in-service missions.

The 900-ton deckhouse provides an advanced structure that will house the ship's bridge, radars, antennae and intake/exhaust systems and is designed to provide a significantly smaller radar cross-section than any other ship in today's fleet.

The future amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) departed Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Aug. 9 after a four-day port visit. This was the crew's third stop on the ship's maiden transit, "America Visits the Americas" as the ship continues to make its way from Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi to its homeport of San Diego. The crew first visited Cartagena, Colombia and then Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is a fast, agile, focused-mission platform designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation. This vessel is the second of ten 127-meter Independence-variant LCS class ships Austal has been contracted to build for the U.S. Navy as prime contractor subsequent to a $3.5 billion block buy in 2010.

A commissioning, naming and flag-presenting ceremony of the new "Quanzhou" corvette (locally designated guided missile frigate) of the Chinese Navy (PLAN) was held solemnly at a naval port in Xiamen city, east China's Fujian province, on the morning of August 8, 2014, marking that the warship is officially commissioned to the PLAN.. "Quanzhou" is the eleventh Type 056 Corvette (Jiangdao class).

BAE Systems awarded contract for 3 new Offshore Patrol Vessels for the UK Royal Navy

First Virginia class Block III nuclear-powered attack submarine North Dakota completes first voyage
 
The U.S. Navy's newest and most advanced nuclear-powered attack submarine, North Dakota (SSN-784), returned to the General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard Tuesday following the successful completion of its first voyage in open seas, called alpha sea trials. North Dakota is the 11th ship of the Virginia Class, the most capable class of attack submarines ever built. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics.

ALMDS is a sensor system designed to detect, classify and localize floating and near-surface moored mines. Operated from the MH-60S helicopter, ALMDS provides rapid wide-area reconnaissance and assessment of mine threats in littoral zones, confined straits, and choke points.

Boeing Delivers 15th Production P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft to U.S. Navy
 
The 15th P-8A Poseidon built by Boeing arrives at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla., where it will help expand the U.S. Navy’s long-range maritime patrol capabilities. The aircraft, delivered on schedule July 31st, joined the other Poseidon aircraft being used to train Navy crews in preparation for deployment.
The 15th P-8A Poseidon built by Boeing arrives at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla., where it will help expand the U.S. Navy’s long-range maritime patrol capabilities. This milestone achievement involved the performance of intense comprehensive tests by the Navy while underway, which demonstrated the operation of the ship's major systems and equipment.

Pella Shipyard signed contract with Russian Navy for 8 Project 03160 high speed patrol boats
 
Russian shipyard Open Joint Stock Company "Pella" based in Leningrad announced it has signed a contract with the Russian Navy for the delivery of eight Project 03160 Raptor high speed patrol boats. The shipyard also announced that the first vessel which was launched on 15 August 2013 has just completed builder sea trials with success.
