QinetiQ has been awarded a contract of GBP4.2 billion from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to deliver a C2 system that would control multiple unmanned systems. The transportable solution will be used to integrate unmanned platforms from different manufacturers and reduce the burden of the operators.

French Navy Rafale M Fighter Aircraft Conducted Their First Strikes in Iraq and Syria
 
On Monday, November 23, 2015 at 19:30, French forces conducted new strikes against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria. The raid involved six fighters, and for the first time four Rafale fighters from the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier. The raid destroyed one active site occupied by IS terrorists.

Royal Australian Navy Third Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyer "Sydney" Keel Laid
 
Last week marked a significant progress on the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) program, as the keel was laid for the third destroyer, Sydney, and initial combat systems activation has commenced on the first destroyer, Hobart. Sydney is the last of three AWDs currently under construction on this program, which will deliver the most capable warships ever possessed by the Royal Australian Navy.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron will announce today a £178 billion investment in defence equipment and support over the next decade as part of a new Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). The £12 billion uplift in funding will be focused on investments that will help to ensure the UK can respond to diverse threats and includes nine new P-8A Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA). UK currently has an MPA capability gap since the last Nimrod MR2 MPA was retired in 2010.

Building on the nearly 40-year legacy of the Harpoon, the upgraded missile, known as Block II+, will have the ability to receive in-flight updates that improve the targeting and engagement of moving maritime targets.

According to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu "Russian Navy Caspian Flotilla vessels fired 18 cruise missiles on November 20, 2015 from the Caspian Sea. The Kalibr-NK cruise missiles were launched against 7 terrorist position targets in the Syrian provinces of Raqqa, Idlib and Aleppo. All target were destroyed."

U.S. Clears Possible FMS of UGM-84L Harpoon Block II Anti-Ship Missiles for ROK Navy
 
The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Republic of Korea for UGM-84L Harpoon Block II missiles and associated equipment, parts and logistical support for an estimated cost of $110 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale on November 17, 2015.

The MPL 30 system can be adapted on ASV 100 or ASW 150 to fire several types of payloads in collaboration with Etienne Lacroix Group. Navy Recognition learned during the event that the two French companies are working on a variant to protect surface vessels.

The delivery is a culmination of efforts under a subcontract from Leidos, Inc., whose prototype trimaran is designed to serve as the program's unmanned vehicle.

On November 16, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works held a keel-laying ceremony for the Thomas Hudner (DDG 116), the company’s 36th Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer. The ship is named for Captain Thomas Hudner Jr., U.S. Navy (ret.), a Korean War aviator and Medal of Honor recipient.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has issued orders for the Flagship of the Russian Navy Black Sea fleet, the Moskva cruiser (Project 1164 Atlant / Slava class), to work together with a French naval group led by nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle which is departing for Syria this week. The Moskva is currently covering the Russian base in Latakia from the Mediterranean Sea.

Following the terrorist attacks in Paris, French President Hollande announced today that the Charles de Gaulle nuclear-powered aircraft carrier would leave its base on Thursday to deploy to the Eastern Mediterranean. Navy Recognition understands that the air wing will be larger than usual. In the meantime French and American defence officials agreed to increase their cooperation.

Royal Danish Navy orders Rheinmetall’s Millennium gun for Absalon & Iver Huitfeldt-class Frigate
 
The Danish procurement authorities have contracted with the Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall Group to supply additional 35mm Oerlikon Millennium guns for ships of the Royal Danish Navy. The order, which also includes spare parts and technical services, is worth around €20 million. The guns will be shipped in 2016.

Japan to Test its New XASM-3 Supersonic Anti-Ship Missile Against Shirane-class Destroyer
 
Japan's Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced that it will conduct a live fire experiment of the new XASM-3 supersonic anti-ship missile in the Sea of Japan next year. The missile will be tested against a decommissioned Destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). XASM-3 is currently in development by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the Japanese MoD to replace the existing ASM-1 and ASM-2 missiles.

The world's most reliable large ballistic missile, the D5 missile has achieved a total of 157 successful test flights since design completion in 1989. The D5 is the sixth in a series of missile generations deployed since the sea-based deterrent program began 60 years ago.
