Etihad Ship Building will produce additional Falaj 2 class Stealth Patrol Vessels in the UAE

At NAVDEX 2015 naval defense exhibition which was taking place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, last week, Navy Recognition learned from Fincantieri representatives that the Italian shipbuilding company is currently helping to extend the Al Fattan shipyard in Abu Dhabi as part of Etihad Ship Building. The goal is to allow Etihad Ship Building to fullfil the Falaj 2 "Batch 2" order for the UAE Navy. This new batch would consist in at least two additional Stealth Patrol Vessels (and up to 4 according to a source).

The Fincantieri representative at NAVDEX told us that "Batch 2" vessels could be slightly longer and fitted with new engines to achieve higher speeds. Other minor modifications to the original design could also be applied to the new vessels.

Designed and built by Italian shipyard Fincantieri, the Ghantoot and Salahah Stealth Patrol Vessels were ordered by the United Arab Emirates in 2010 as part of the "Falaj 2" program. The Falaj 2 class inshore patrol vessels feature advanced stealth characteristics to reduce their detectability.

Their main feature is their special stealth design making them difficult to detect by radar. Other features of these ships include their high level of flexibility in being able to carry out different types of mission in national and international waters (from patrol and surveillance, to defence from air and surface threats and attacks against land and sea targets), as well as their high standards of accommodation and safety.
