The Project 971 (Akula-class) nuclear-powered submarine Kuzbass (K-419) under repairs and upgrade at the Zvezda Shipyard in Russia’s Far East since 2009 will become operational with the Navy before the end of March, the Russian Defense Ministry’s press office said.

The nuclear-powered submarine Kuzbass is armed with missiles and torpedoes, the press office added.
"Under the program for the upgrade and repair of nuclear-powered submarines operational with the Russian Navy, the Project 971 nuclear-powered multipurpose submarine will re-enter service with the Russian Pacific Fleet’s submarine forces before the end of March after the repairs at the Zvezda Shipyard in the Primorye Territory in the Far East," the press office said in a press release obtained by TASS.

The submarine’s life support systems, as well as radio technical equipment and sonar apparatus have been upgraded. "The nuclear-powered submarine Kuzbass is currently undergoing the final stage of shipbuilders’ trials," the press office said.

The submarine Kuzbass has been under repairs at the Zvezda Shipyard since 2009.
