Russian Navy Udaloy-class (Project 1155) ASW Destroyers Won't Get Cruise Missiles for Now

The conversion of the Russian Navy’s Project 1155 large anti-submarine warfare (ASW) destroyers, to the Kalibr missile system has not begun yet, Igor Ponomaryov, vice-president, military shipbuilding, United Shipbuilding Corporation, told TASS at the KADEX 2016 arms show. "To date, we have not received a requirements specification for [the Project] 1155 [ship] from the Defense Ministry and the full-fledged work has not started yet," Ponomaryov said.

"We are ready to do the job, once there is a request. We have got the expertise, manpower and production facilities," the USC vice-president emphasized.

Ponomaryov noted that heavy upgrade has always been open to discussion, because it may cost 80% of the cost of a newly built ship, while the service life of the upgraded ship will be far shorter.

"We are working with the Navy on that and are looking into the cost and expediency of the work. Maybe, it makes sense [for the Navy] to order advanced ships," the USC vice-president said.

Last summer, the then Russian Navy commander-in-chief, Adm. Victor Chirkov, said the first Project 1155 ship would be re-armed with the Kalibr and Oniks missile systems within two years, i.e. in 2017.
