Russia develops air-independent propulsion unit for diesel-electric submarines
 
Russia’s Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering developed an air-independent propulsion unit for diesel-electric submarines in 2015, according to the design bureau’s annual report published on the Corporate Information Disclosure Center’s website.

The Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering is a subsidiary of Russia’s United Ship-Building Corporation.

"The design bureau continues equipping diesel-electric submarines with air-independent propulsion units able to burn reformed diesel fuel. Air-independent propulsion units of this type also have electrochemical generators," the design bureau said in the report.

"This air-independent propulsion unit will make the submarine’s submerged operating capability equal to its cruising capacity, which is more than one month," the design bureau said. "The construction of a special floating facility designed to test a shipborne version of the air-independent propulsion unit at sea is currently under way," the design bureau added.

According to the report, the air-independent propulsion unit for diesel-electric submarines was developed in 2015 as part of the Kalina-Navy research work.
