Russian Pacific Fleet Large Landing Ships Conduct Amphibious Drills in Sea of Japan

The Russian Pacific Fleet’s large landing ships practiced more than 20 tactical problems during a test tactical exercise as part of the final phase of the winter training period. In the course of it, they, inter alia, rendered assistance to a simulated ship in distress, replenished at sea and maintained their technical readiness, an Eastern Military District spokesman, Roman Martov, told TASS on Wednesday.

"Surface combatant task forces of the Primorye All-Arms Flotilla are operating in the Sea of Japan as part of the final phase of their winter training period. Large landing ships are conducting a test tactical exercise this week. Early in the exercise, the ships were deploying and sailing to their assigned training areas," he said.

Martov added that the ships’ antocommando teams honed their skills in protecting and defending their ships en route and at unsafe roadsteads. During Phase II, the ships took Marine units and their combat vehicles on board and followed coastal minesweepers via the areas ‘mined’ by the notional enemy.

The ships repelled air attacks on passage to the beachhead. Their artillery crews had gunnery practice, engaging targets deployed by an Ilyushin Il-38 (NATO reporting name: May) maritime patrol aircraft. When the Marines hit the beach in a simulated assault landing, targets on the shore were engaged.
