Oscar II-class Project 949A Submarine Smolensk Launches Cruise Missile in Barents Sea drills
 
The Project 949A Antey-class (NATO reporting name: Oscar II-class) nuclear-powered attack submarine Smolensk has launched a cruise missile against a target during an exercise in the Barents Sea, the fleet’s press office said.

"A Granit [NATO reporting name: SS-N-19 Shipwreck] cruise missile was launched from the underwater position against a complex shipborne practice target at a distance of about 400 kilometers [248 miles]," the press office said. "According to data of the live monitoring and recording system, the target was hit," the press office added.

The launch was conducted as part of the planned combat training.

As Northern Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov said, "during the live-firing exercise and the preparation for them, the crew demonstrated high professionalism and naval skills."

The Project 949A nuclear-powered submarine has a length of 155 meters, a displacement of 24,000 tons, a depth of submersion of 600 meters and an underwater speed of 32 knots. Its crew totals 107. The Project 949A nuclear-powered submarine is armed with six torpedo tubes and 24 launchers to fire Granit cruise missiles with a range of about 500 kilometers (311 miles).
