At NAVDEX 2015, the naval defense exhibition which was taking place in the UAE last week, Italian company Oto Melara and its local partner Siham Al Khaleej Technology (SAKT) showcased their full range of light weight remote wapon systems for naval applications: The MARLIN WS 30mm, the HITROLE N 12.7mm, the HITROLE 20mm and the HITROLE G 12.7mm on an Al Fattan catamaran torpedo boat.

The MARLIN - WS is an advanced system developed to meet the emerging requirements of modern naval warfare at best level of effectiveness and suitable either as main armament for small size vessels or as secondary armament for larger ship, with no deck penetration and simple installation.

The MARLIN - WS is a highly accurate and reliable multirole system, particularly effective in the simultaneous engagement of multiple targets such as swarms of Fast Inshore Attack Crafts.

The MARLIN – WS can be fitted with either a 25mm or 30mm cannon and it is modular as to be configured according to an wide range of customers’ requirements. The modular architecture offers an extensive combination of characteristics. Optical sensor suite with day and night vision and laser range finder can be mounted coaxially to or independent from the line of fire or not installed at all.

The excellent performance provided by the fast and accurate servo systems, are also ensured working either as a stand-alone system with own Remote Control Console or linked to the ship’s Combat Management System. The latest generation of builtin digital architecture provides a straightforward interface for being simply slaved to the ship’s Fire Control System or being fully integrated into the CMS through LAN technology with Fire Control System and video tracking capabilities residing within the weapon.

HITROLE N 12.7mm naval turret is a modern system fully controlled from a remote station via an advanced control console that allows the gunner to operate from a protected position within the ship’s structure: any operation, including loading and recocking, can be undertaken with maximum safety for the operator.

Low weight and high level of flexibility make this turret particularly suitable for installation as main armament of any small patrol vessel engaged in border control, maritime traffic interdiction or as a secondary armament on larger ships for self protection in the anti-terrorism role.

HITROLE N 12.7mm turret is a stand alone system with stabilization achieved via built-in Gyros system: no external signal is required by the turret from other ship systems. For special operations the 12,7mm (0.50 cal.) machine gun can be replaced with a 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher (40mm AGL), capable of shooting also ‘non lethal ammunition’. The weapon replacement can be achieved in a few minutes with no need of special tools.

The HITROLE 20mm is a modern, fully stabilized, electrically operated and remotely controlled naval weapon system, fitted with a multi barrels cannon, which can represent an effective, short range self defense for small boats as well as the secondary armament for any class of ship. The high rate of fire and the 20mm caliber make the particularly well suited for Coast Guard patrolling operations, anti-smuggling operations and for countering asymmetric threats.

The high capacity of the ammunition storage (750 rounds 20mm), provides the necessary operative flexibility and autonomy for close-in protection against sea-based threats and air targets. HITROLE 20mm is fitted, as standard configuration, with the renowned three barrels 20 mm x 102 mm Gatling gun, characterized by high reliability and rate of fire. The system, upon request, can be fitted in alternative with single barrel machine guns of 12.7mm caliber, 12.7mm Gatling gun, 40mm AGL, or, as growth potential, six barrels 20 mm x 102 mm Gatling gun and 30 mm LF chain gun.

HITROLE 20mm can be easily operated by a single operator through a Remote Control Console and joystick or can be controlled by the ship’s Combat Management System. Installation on board is very simple and does not require deck penetration.

The HITROLE G is a modern, fully stabilized, electrically operated and remotely controlled naval weapon system that can be fitted with a range of single or multi barrels cannons, well suited for policing operations and countering asymmetric threats.

An “on mount” high capacity ammunition storage (400 rounds 12,7mm), plus additional ammunition depots under the mount, guarantee the necessary operative flexibility and autonomy for close-in protection against sea-based threats and air targets. HITROLE G can be fitted with single barrel cannons of 12,7mm, or 7,62mm, or 5,56mm in caliber or 40mm AGL , while the choice for multi barrel Gatling cannons is of 12,7mm or 7,62mm, or 5,56 mm in caliber.

HITROLE G can be easily operated by a single operator through a Remote Control Console and joystick or it can be controlled by the ship’s Combat Management System. Installation on board is simplified with only one Logic Control & Movement Unit (ULCM) box. The low RCS shield designed for demanding RCS requirements, protects the system and enhance its endurance under harsh environments.
