"I believe it [the construction of the first fifth-generation diesel-electric submarine] will begin in five years," Rakhmanov said in reply to the relevant question.

As CEO of Russia’s Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering Igor Vilnit told TASS earlier, the Project 677 Lada-class submarine will serve as the basis for the fifth-generation diesel-electric submarine.

Russia’s Northern Fleet is conducting operational evaluation of the Project 677 lead submarine St. Petersburg. Two Project 677 submarines are currently under construction.

The fifth-generation diesel-electric submarine will be equipped with an air-independent propulsion unit.
