The Polish Navy (Marynarka Wojenna) commissioned the first of a new class of mine counter measure (MCM) vessel on November 28th. The date also marked the 99th anniversary of the creation of the Polish Navy. The Inauguration Ceremony was held in Gdynia. The flag raising ceremony was attended by the minister of defence Antoni Macierewicz and several local and military authorities.

The official photographs taken during the rollout of the first Project 955A (Borey-A-class) nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) 'Knyaz Vladimir' intended for the Navy of the Russian Federation have revealed a number of design changes from the three earlier Project 955 (Borey-class) boats, according to the experts of the IHS Jane`s think-tank.
 

Naval Group delivers new visual defence simulators to the French Navy

Naval Group has delivered a brand new visual defence simulator (Simdav) to the French Navy in Brest, after that delivered to Toulon at the end of 2016. Both deliveries form part of the 5-year modernisation and through-life support contract awarded by the DGA (French armament procurement agency) in December 2014. The new systems will allow the crews of the French Naval Action Force (and the Grouping of naval infantry and maritime gendarmes) to train under realistic conditions.
 

Russia Starting Construction of Naval Base in Kuril Islands

Russia is beginning to build a naval base on the Kurile Islands. It will be located on Matua Island in the central part of the archipelago, expert Anatoly Ivanko writes in the Military-Industrial Courier. The base has a major military-strategic significance. The existing runway will get infrastructure and will be used as a jump-up airfield for Tu-22M3 bombers which will fly from there to distant areas of the Pacific Ocean.

 

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK completes modernization of Finnish Navy Pansio-class Minelayers

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK Finland Oy as prime contractor has successfully completed the Mid-Life Upgrade program for three PANSIO class inshore minelayers of the Finnish Defence Forces. Today the third and final upgraded ship, PYHÄRANTA, was delivered to the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command. The first ship, PANSIO, was delivered in October 2016 and the second, PORKKALA, in May 2017. The contract for the mid-life upgrade was signed in May 2015.

Honorary Commodore in Chief of the RFA, HRH Prince Edward the Earl of Wessex KG, GCVO, was in Portsmouth today to welcome RFA Tidespring to the operational fleet. The new 37,000 tonne ship, one of the four biggest tankers to be purpose built for the RFA, recently arrived at HM Naval Base Portsmouth in preparation for her official acceptance into operational service. Once in service with the RFA, she will provide fuel, food and stores for Royal Navy warships all around the world.

The second prototype of the NH90 Sea Lion commissioned by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr) lifted off from the Donauwörth site for its maiden flight on 24 November 2017.
 

China's 36th & 37th Type 056 Corvettes (Jiangdao class) Commissioned in PLAN South Sea Fleet

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) commissioned two new Type 056 Corvettes (Jiangdao class) in the past two weeks. Guangyuan (hull number 552) was commissioned on November 16th during a ceremony at Guangzhou naval base. Suining (hull number 551) was commissioned on November 28th in Guangdong province. Both vessels are Type 056A variant specialized in anti-submarine warfare (ASW).

The UK will send a second warship to the Asia Pacific region to strengthen relations with allies in the area. Addressing the crew on HMS Sutherland this morning, the Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson announced that the ship will leave Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Devonport in the New Year to represent UK interests across the Indian Ocean and into the Pacific.

The Israeli's Defense Forces (IDF) declared the Naval Iron Dome system operational after an 18-monthss test campaign aboard Sa'ar 5 corvette INS Lahav. The integration of the Iron Dome air defense missile system aboard surface vessel follows the emerging need of Israel to protect strategic assets at sea, such as oil/natural gas rigs. Israel’s hydrocarbons fields and drilling installations in the East Mediterranean Sea have increased the requirements for security.

The 1st Submarine Flotilla is an operational level organization with the ability to act against targets both submerged and on the surface. The flotilla has the ability to perform intelligence gathering operations, surveillance operations, submarine rescue operations, diving and salvage operations and transport of special forces.
