Russia`s 'Admiral Nakhimov' heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser of Project 11442M (NATO reporting name: Kirov-class) is waiting for hull rebuilding works. The rebuilding will change the design of the ship: the missile deck and the superstructure that incorporates the conning room, the combat information center and antenna farm will be modified (the later in a partial manner). The large-scale works are required to integrate advanced weapon systems. The rebuilding of the hull may lead to the shift of the delivery date of the ship, according to the Izvestia newspaper.

The experts say that such ships as the Project 11442M cruisers are important for Russia`s Navy and should stay in service for several decades, being equipped with state-of-the-art weapon systems. The 'Admiral Nakhimov' was built in the 1980s; therefore, a substantial rebuilding is required for the installation of new weapons and complexes. Therefore, the Navy will get a universal combat platform as the result of these works.

The Izvestia newspaper was told at the Navy`s General Headquarters that the engineering changes to the design of the 'Admiral Nakhimov' had been agreed, and their preliminary cost and terms of completion were being estimated. The rebuilding of the hull is required for the integration of advanced weapon systems.

According to the Izvestia newspaper, the updated Project 11442M ships will get the 3S-14 Kalibr vertical launch systems (VLS). The 'Nakhimov' is also planned to get the Poliment-Redut modern surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. The cruiser will be fitted with new electronics, in particular, modern radars and digital communication systems that envision the replacement of the antenna farm.

The powerful onboard computer of the updated 'Nakhimov' will be a feather in the caps of the shipbuilders. The artificial intelligence of the ship will be able to evaluate environment, to predict the course of actions and even to use weapons independently.

The 'Admiral Nakhimov' went into service in late 1988. In the late 2000s - early 2010s, the decision to conduct a deep modernization and to turn the ship into a modern universal combat platform with high potential, the Izvestia newspaper says.

The Sevmash Shipyard launched the modernization of the Admiral Nakhimov to Project 11442M standard on January 24, 2014. The modernization started with dismounting the large equipment and systems subject to replacement or repair. This slashed the structural weight, which, in turn, made it easier to bring the ship from the berth to the flooding dock.

Sevmash and KBSM (Special Machinebuilding Design Bureau) made a deal for 10 modules of 3S14 vertical launch system (VLS) for installation as part of the cruiser’s upgrade. The deal’s value is estimated at 2.559 billion rubles ($39 million). Thus, 20 SM-225 launchers of the 3K-45 Granit (SS-N-19 Shipwreck) system will be replaced with 10 3S14 VLS modules to accommodate 3M-14 (SS-N-30) land-attack and 3M-54 (SS-N-27A Sizzler) antiship cruise missiles of the Kalibr missile system. The ammunition load will total 80 missiles.

The Project 11442M (NATO reporting name: Kirov-class) Admiral Nakhimov nuclear-powered heavy guided missile cruiser will be equipped with Tsirkon hypersonic missiles during her upgrade, a source in shipbuilding industry previously told TASS. "The Admiral Nakhimov’s strike system will be replaced with Tsirkon hypersonic missiles as part of her repair and heavy upgrade," the source said.

It was earlier reported that the first Russian Navy vessel to receive Pantsir-M missile and gun system will be heavy nuclear missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov. It will also be fitted with a new generation information management system.
