Shipyard in Volga area to build six Project 22160 patrol ships for Russia’s Navy
 
Russia’s Navy is planning to receive six Project 22160 patrol ships, Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Vladimir Korolyov said. "A series of Project 22160 patrol ships designed for the Russian Navy is currently under construction at the Zelenodolsk Shipyard [in the Volga area]. As of today, a contract for six patrol ships of the type has been signed," Korolyov said.

According to him, the Admiralty Wharves Shipyard in St. Petersburg in northwest Russia is currently building the first Project 23550 ice-class patrol ship Ivan Papanin. Two ships of the type are planned to be built under a contract.

"The ship Ivan Papanin is 15% ready. The work is being carried out on schedule. The ship is currently under construction at an out-of-door slipway and its hull is being built now," Korolyov said.

According to him, all technical requirements set to the ships of the type by the Navy will be met.

The Project 23550 ice-class patrol ship Ivan Papanin has been developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau. It will have a displacement of about 9,000 tons and a length of 100 meters. The ship will combine the characteristics of a tug, an icebreaker, a patrol and an ocean survey ships.

The Project 22160 ship has a displacement of about 1,300 tons. It is armed with the 57mm gun, machineguns and launchers for Igla (NATO reporting name: SA-18 Grouse) surface-to-air missiles and carries a helicopter. As of today, five ships of the type have been laid down and are being built now.
