The Kolomna plant has repaired the faulty 10D49 propulsion diesel engine mounted on the Project 22350 lead frigate Admiral Gorshkov, a source close to the situation told the Flotprom online media organization. The engine broke down on December 23, 2017.

To repair the engine, the plant replaced the broken connecting rod. According to the source, plant workers disassembled the engine shaft and some parts of the diesel engine were brought to Kolomna for examination and replacement.

The engine was repaired in the frigate’s engine room. There were not any cuts in the frigate’s hull and the work was completed on time. The repair of the engine was completed in March, as planned.

The reason for the breakdown has not been found yet, the source said. The relevant document was planned to be prepared by mid-February. The press offices of the Kolomna Plant and the Transmashholding Group declined to comment on the repair of the diesel engine for the frigate Admiral Gorshkov.

According to the companies’ representatives, this issue is related to the state defense order and cannot be commented on.

The Kolomna Plant is a Transmashholding Group subsidiary.

Experts in the sphere of diesel engine manufacturing from the Zvezda Plant and the Zorya-Mashproekt Enterprise could not suggest the reason for the breakdown. According to them, connecting rods are damaged owing to production defects, low-quality materials or designer mistake. The experts called to wait for the official reason for the engine breakdown but doubted that it would be disclosed.
