Malaysia: the French pavilion at DSA 2014 French defence industry and the Asian market

Driven by the French arms industry's positive export results published by the Ministry of Defence in January (+31% order intake in 2013 compared to 2012, provisional figure), French industrialists from the naval, land and aeronautics defence and safety sector pursue their growth strategy at DSA on the Asian market where their presence is already well established.

Thirty companies, including twenty two federated by the GICAN, will be present in Kuala Lumpur from the 14th to 17th of April this year, at the heart of a fast-growing market where competition is important between exporting nations.

GICAN federates the French pavilion at DSA
At this 14th edition of the DSA exhibition, the GICAN acts as unifier for the French pavilion and will organise and accompany a delegation of three senators, members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Defence and armed forces. This official delegation, made up of senators Jacques GAUTIER, Daniel REINER and Alain NERI, will meet with the official Malaysian authorities, French industrialists present at the exhibition and their local partners, in order to support the “French team” in this strategically important country.

Malaysia and relations with France
Stéphane REB, director of international development of the DGA (General Directorate for Armament) and armament engineer: “In the defence sector, Malaysia is France's privileged partner in South-East Asia. For over ten years, our defence cooperation, formalised by an intergovernmental cooperation agreement, is based on three pillars: strategic dialogue, military cooperation and armament cooperation. This agreement sets up the senior defence committees who meet on an annual basis. Furthermore, visits from high level leadership, such as the visit by the French Prime Minister Mr AYRAULT in July 2013, allow us to reinforce our cooperative relationships.
Strategic dialogue allows us to discuss regional and international issues of safety and defence, and to strengthen our relationship through mutual understanding of these concerns.
In terms of military cooperation, there is a good deal of exchange between the two Defence ministries; between the Air Forces, Naval Forces and ground forces. Exercises are conducted and volunteers provided.”

Malaysia: commercial opportunities for French Defence industries

Based on an intergovernmental agreement signed in 1993, French-Malaysian defence dialogue is founded on three pillars: strategic dialogue, military cooperation and armament cooperation.
This bilateral defence relationship also includes cooperation between French and Malaysian defence companies. Relations with the Malaysian armed forces have developed significantly thanks to the sale of two Scorpène submarines and as a result of French support for the creation of a submarine force.
Strategic programmes for French defence equipment purchased by Malaysia are thus accompanied by a proactive and shared policy for developing partnerships between both large industrial groups and small and medium-sized companies. The acquisition of Scorpène submarines, helicopters, A400M transport aircraft, equipment or high-technology and technical expertise know-how is consistent with this long-term cooperation, and is often supported by the employment community within the armed forces of the two countries.

The GICAN, long time coordinator of many French Pavilions at major international defence exhibitions.

The French Marine Industry Group includes 172 (as of 26/06/13) French companies from the shipping, civil and military sectors. It promotes their high-technology know-how in France and abroad. Its members represent a turnover of €8,5 billion in France and 40,000 jobs, with export counting for a total of 45%.

The GICAN organises the biennial event EURONAVAL, the largest international exhibition of naval defence and maritime safety.
