The SPAWAR Lighting Bolt Award is given quarterly in recognition of superior achievements and contributions to SPAWAR or supported PEOs.

The DAMA IW/UHF SATCOM to Patrol Coastal Team was formed to quickly address the Chief of Naval Operations request for a replacement UHF SATCOM system for forward deployed Patrol Coastal ships. Critical to overcoming the tight time constraints was the team’s proactive approach and open communication and cooperation leading the team to successfully achieve all phases of the installation in a quarter of the normal process time. As a result of the team’s untiring efforts and outside the box approach, PCs 2, 7, and 12 were deployed with a modernized and reliable UHF SATCOM system. The team’s effort ultimately increased the US Navy’s near-term ability to use Patrol Coastal ships to counter fast attack craft.
