The
Royal Navy (RN) is the maritime force of the British
Armed Forces.
The Royal Navy is divided into three flotillas:
- The Portsmouth flotilla.
- The Devonport flotilla.
- The Faslane Flotilla.
The Royal Navy also has two squadrons permanently
deployed in Gibraltar and in Cyprus.
The
Royal Navy often operates with Royal Fleet Auxiliary
(RFA) vessels whose primary role is to supply the
Royal Navy with fuel, ammunition and supplies or
transport Army and Royal Marine troops.
The Royal Navy operates 88 combat vessels including
one aircraft carrier and ten nuclear powered submarines,
plus 16 auxiliary and support vessels from the RFA.
It is composed of approximately 36,000 sailors.
