Seawolf introduces new special warfare boat, the STYX-FS

At Euronaval 2014, Seawolf, the defense and security division of French manufacturer Pirenn S.A.S., showcases its special warfare boat, the STYX-FS. Thanks to Pirenn’s expertise and experience in the maritime field, this boat was designed from the top down with the idea of being evolutional, sustainable and easy to maintain and operate.

Pirenn within its Seawolf department conducted a technological approach: from users and their environment; for the efficiency of the crew during its mission; and taking account of the latest innovations and their future developments.

The hull design is typed Mannerfelt and Campbell and directly inspired from innovations in offshore racing. Axial strakes inverted from the V of the hull allows the flow of water to work optimally. They are reported to the hull and serve as a benchmark and wear strip, (strandings). A bracket allows the propellers to work at their maximum efficiency without adding flaps — fragile appendice wich is often a source of damage. A shoe keel and two fins on either side of the stern complete the search for performance and stability. The hydrostatic study was realized by ACCF engineering consulting firm.

The STYX is made of infused composite. Fabrics are laid dry and the resin is injected (with a 1 kilogram precision), this technology allows a optimal weight/performance ratio resistance. This technology is primarily used for small parts (carbon...) or for high speed sailing multihulls. This process is unique in Europe for this kind of boat. The hull frame is filled with closed cell foam (Erex type) and this guarantees the boat is unsinkable. The boat was tested with 2.5 tons of water in the bilge.

The Styx has a length of 7,80m (overall length: 8,20m), a width of 2,46m and a depth of 0.80 m max., which is depending on load case. The equipped hull weighs 2100 kg with 2X250CV outboard motors, and payload can be up to 1400 kg.

Styx’s Construction combines infused composite with glass multiaxial reinforcements, inner structure subdivisions and buoyancy foaming. The ship has integrated fuel tanks (2X290 liters), with stainless steel nozzle. The Styx’s equipment also comprises aluminium console and leaning post, pods, grenade launcher and anti-crash bar. Sea Wolf’s vessel Garmin electrical equipment is composed with 2 GPS combined tracer-card readers, sonar, radar, VHF, all networked NMEA 2000.

The STYX is currently being evaluated by French Special Forces such as the 1er RPIMA.
