Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division announced today the successful completion of builder’s sea trials on the guided missile destroyer Ralph Johnson (DDG 114). The Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class destroyer spent more than three days in the Gulf of Mexico testing the ship’s main propulsion, combat and other ship systems.

Lockheed Martin received an $86.5 million contract from the U.S. Navy and Air Force for Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) production. The contract marks the first production award for the air-launched variant of LRASM, and includes 23 missiles and engineering support. Low-rate initial production Lot 1 is the first of several expected annual production lots that will deliver next-generation anti-ship missiles to the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force.

Russian Chinese drills Naval Interaction 2017 Baltic Sea Russia’s newest Project 22160 patrol ships will be reinforced with Ka-29 assault/transport helicopters, the newspaper Izvestia reports. Each rotorcraft can be equipped with guided missiles, unguided rockets, bombs and aircraft guns and also carry 16 marines in full kit. Previously, the Ka-29 was stationed only on ground airfields and deployed aboard large landing ships and the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.

Reliance Defence and Engineering Limited (RDEL) today launched the first two Naval Offshore Patrol Vessels (NOPVs) at their shipyard in Pipavav, Gujarat. The ships are part of a five ship project being constructed for the Indian Navy. The two NOPVs, Shachi and Shruti were launched by Smt. Preeti Luthra, wife of Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC; the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command at the RDEL Shipyard Pipavav, Gujarat.

The revolutionary railgun relies on a massive electrical pulse, rather than gunpowder or other chemical propellants, to launch projectiles at distances over 100 nautical miles – and at speeds that exceed Mach 6.

Recently, a novel coating developed by researchers at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) for the exterior topsides of Navy surface ships went beyond small area testing to covering the entire freeboard of an amphibious assault ship. Until April of 2017, NRL’s single-component (1K) polysiloxane coating had only been tested on 400-800 sq.ft. areas of ships due to limited production quantities and the typical size of topside paint repairs conducted by their crews.
