Vympel Shipyard in Central Russia to Complete, Upgrade 2 Unfinished Molniya-class Missile Boats
 
The Vympel Shipyard in Rybinsk in central Russia will complete, repair and upgrade two Project 12418 Molniya-class missile boats for the Russian Navy, the shipyard’s press office said on Friday. "The Vympel Shipyard has signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry to upgrade and repair two Project 12418 Molniya-class missile boats," the press office said.

The two missile boats, originally laid in 1991-1992 at the shipyard "Vympel" were export Project 12421 with the "Mosquito" antiship missile system. Export customers were never found and since the mid-1990s, the two boats are in an unfinished form (and never launched in the water) at the shipyard.

"The missile boats will be furnished with modern navigation and communications equipment. The boat’s design will be changed and improved," the press office added.

"The Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau in St. Petersburg [in northwest Russia] will adapt the detail design to the state customer’s requirements," the press office said.

According to the press office, the upgraded boat (factory number No. 01301) will be delivered to the customer on November 25, 2018. The second boat (factory number No. 01302) will join the Russian Navy in November 2019. The two missile boats, originally laid in 1991-1992 at the shipyard "Vympel" were export Project 12421 with the "Mosquito" antiship missile system. The Project 12418 missile boat is designed to fight the enemy’s surface ships, boats and vessels both independently and within a formation. The boat has a displacement of 510 tons, a length of 56.9 meters, a maximum speed of 40 knots and endurance of 2,300 miles.

The Project 12418 missile boat is armed with the AK-176M 76mm artillery gun, the Uran missile system comprising 16 missiles in four launch tubes, AK-630M 30mm artillery systems and 12 surface-to-air missiles of the Igla mobile air defense missile system.
