Navy Recognition learned that DCNS will introduce a new submarine concept at Euronaval 2014 which be held from October 27th to 31st at Paris Le Bourget in France. The SMX OCEAN is based on a Barracuda hull, the next generation SSN of the French Navy, fitted with a conventional propulsion system (SSK) with AIP technology.

ROC Navy Catamaran Corvette "Tuo River", first Taiwanese LCS, started Sea Trials
 
Taiwan's first unit in a new class of 12 catamaran corvettes started its trials at sea. The "Tuo River" was going out at sea for the first time from Suao in northeastern Taiwan's Yilan county, where it was christened in March this year. The corvette will undergo a series of sea trials before its commissioning expected in the first half of 2015.

Chinese Navy Continues Flight Test Campaign of Future Maritime Patrol Aircraft Y-8FQ Cub/GX-6
 
A new picture recently surfaced from China showing the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) added a second Y-8FQ aircraft to conduct flight test and eventually qualify the new type of Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA). The Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) variant of Y-8, the Y-8FQ Cub (also known as GX-6 for High New 6) first surfaced on the Chinese internet in November 2011 as we reported at the time.

U.S. Navy Harpoon anti-ship missile displays capability during military exercise
 
The U.S Navy successfully fired multiple Harpoon missiles as part of the joint military exercise, Valiant Shield, demonstrating its effectiveness against modern day threats. A total of six Harpoon missiles, launched from F/A-18 and P-3 aircrafts and two surface ships, USS Stethem (DDG 63) and USS Shiloh (CG 67), detected, tracked and engaged their intended targets, during live fire events, Sept. 15.

Babcock Completes Design for future ROK Navy KSS-III Submarine Weapon Handling System
 
Babcock has successfully completed the design definition of the Weapon Handling System (WHS) for South Korea’s Jangbogo III submarine (KSS-III), marking an important milestone in the project. Babcock was awarded a contract by DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) to design the Weapon Handling and Launch System (WHLS) for the 3,000 tonne Jangbogo III submarine, and manufacture the equipment for the first two boats of a class of up to nine.

At AAD 2014 CSOC showcased OPV, LPD and Aircraft Carrier designs from China
 
At AAD 2014 (Africa Aerospace and Defence Exhibition which took place from the 17 to 21 September in South Africa) the China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company (CSOC) showcased its P18N Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) and its LPD/LHD design. French Navy ATL 2 MPA versatility proving to be an asset for missions over Iraq
 
Deployed in the Persian Gulf since the beginning of the month, French Navy's Atlantique 2 (ATL2) maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) belonging to naval air squadron 23F are currently deployed to Al Dhafra air base in the United Arab Emirates. On Sept 17, it flew its first reconnaissance mission in Iraqi airspace and on the 19th it provided ISTAR (Intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance) support for the first French raid against ISIL and then povided damage assessment reports.

Royal Navy of Oman takes delivery of Damen Clipper
 
The new Sail Training Vessel (STV) for the Ministry of Defence of Oman has been officially launched at Damen Shipyards Galati (Romania). This stunning 87 m vessel, named RNOV ‘Shabab Oman’, is destined to become the flagship of the Royal Navy of Oman to continue the role of the current STV of the same name in promoting cultural interaction and to help ‘spread peace and harmony amongst nations’. Shabab Oman is a full square rigger and will have an amazing 2,700 m² sail area.
On 12 September, the Royal Navy of Oman formally accepted ownership of its new sail training vessel at a ceremony at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. The three-masted steel clipper, named RNOV Shabab Oman II, will sail the world’s oceans as an ambassador for Oman, demonstrating the country’s centuries-old maritime tradition. The 87-metre vessel is Damen's third such clipper, proving the value of Damen’s reliable craftsmanship and engineering.

The UAS flew 11 hours from the Northrop Grumman Corporation facility in Palmdale to Naval Air Station Patuxent River to start its next phase of testing, moving the program closer toward operational assessment. Northrop Grumman is the prime contractor for the Navy's MQ-4C Triton UAS program.

The MF-STAR - Multi-Function Surveillance, Track and Guidance Radar was fitted as part of an upgrade program for the 3 vessels of the class.

General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics , was awarded a $16.2 million contract by the U.S. Navy to produce Type-3 Advanced Mission Computers (AMC) for the F/A-18 E/A-18G Super Hornet aircraft. Since 2002 General Dynamics has produced, tested and delivered the F/A-18 AMC, which serves as the nerve center of the Super Hornet and provides the Navy with situational awareness and combat systems control.

Russia’s first Varshavyanka-class submarine "Novorossiisk" joined Black Sea Fleet
 
The Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg will lay down on Friday a new Varshavyanka class diesel-electric submarine for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the company said. Stary Oskol will be the third in a series of six Varshavyanka class submarines which are expected to join the fleet by 2016. The first sub, the Novorossiisk, was laid down in August 2010, followed by Rostov-on-Don in November 2011.

Russia's first Varshavyanka-class submarine, the Novorossiisk, has entered service with the Black Sea fleet, the Southern Military District's press service said Wednesday, September 17. The submarine currently remains at the Admiralty shipyard in St. Petersburg and will head to the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk after completing final trials with the Northern Fleet.

KONGSBERG contracted by US Navy to test NSM from Littoral Combat Ship
 
The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Mission Modules (MM) program successfully completed the first Structural Test Firing (STF) of the 30mm gun mission module aboard USS Coronado (LCS 4) off the coast of Southern California April 30. The purpose of the STF is to challenge the ship in the most severe blast conditions of the weapon's fire. STF is a total ship test involving live weapons fire and is required for each ship class or variant.
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS (KONGSBERG) is contracted by the US Navy to test fire KONGSBERG`s Naval Strike Missile (NSM) from the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) under the Foreign Comparative Testing program. The firing was requested by the US Navy to demonstrate the capability to engage a surface target at a range of 100 nautical miles from an LCS class ship. The test is planned to be conducted during September this year from the USS Coronado, an Independence-class LCS.

In August 2014 the Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina in Spanish) and Damen Shipyards Group (the Netherlands) signed contracts for the delivery of the design, material package, technical assistance and training for two vessels that will be built by the Mexican Navy, using the Damen Technical Cooperation programme, which enables customers to build their vessel on the location of their choice.

Ingalls Shipbuilding Delivers National Security Cutter Hamilton to U.S. Coast Guard
 
Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division announced today the completion of acceptance sea trials for the company's fourth U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter, Hamilton (WMSL 753). The ship was underway for a two-day period in the Gulf of Mexico, performing numerous tests and demonstrations of shipboard systems for the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV).
Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division delivered the National Security Cutter Hamilton (WMSL 753) to the U.S. Coast Guard today. The ship will be commissioned in Charleston, S.C., on Dec. 6. "Our performance on the National Security Cutter program is a blueprint for success in building high-quality, affordable ships," said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias.
