Australia to Evaluate French, German and Japanese designs for Future Submarine Program
 
Today the Australian Government announces the acquisition strategy for the Future Submarine Program. This announcement sets out further details of the competitive evaluation process that will be undertaken by the Department of Defence. Submarines are an essential component of Australia’s naval capability and the Government will ensure that the future submarine provides the best possible capability and value for money for Australian taxpayers while maximising the involvement of Australian industry.

Lockheed Martin LRASM Anti-Ship Missile Completes Third Flight Test
 
The Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) built by Lockheed Martin achieved a third successful air-launched flight test, with the missile performing as expected during low altitude flight. The test, conducted on Feb. 4, was in support of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy joint-service LRASM program.

New Success in Egypt for DCNS and its FREMM Frigate (plus some technical details)
 
On Monday 16 February, DCNS signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence of the Arab Republic of Egypt for the supply of a FREMM multi-mission frigate. This agreement strengthens the strategic relations initiated by DCNS last July with the signing of a contract to supply four Gowind® 2500 corvettes. Egypt becomes the second export customer of the FREMM after Morocco.

Following several days of stalking under constant threat from US Navy's P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and Arleigh Burke class destroyers, the Saphire Commanding Officer managed to lock the massive profile of the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier in the crosshairs of his periscope. Another few hundred yards and the French Navy Rubis-class SSN will be in firing range. The crew inside the Combat Information Center holds its breath: the US Carrier Strike Group is on alert and the slightest noise would induce a lightning and lethal response.

Sixth and last Type 052C Destroyer commissioned into Chinese Navy (PLAN)
 
According to the official People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) newspaper "People's Navy Daily", the sixth Type 052C Destroyer (NATO designation Luyang II class) named Xi'an was commissioned into the PLAN on February 9. Xi'an with hull number 153 is the last Type 052C Destroyer of the series. From now on, the PLAN will commission improved and more powerful destroyers such as the Type 052D and the future Type 055.

Official French Navy Statement on the Sale of a FREMM Multi-Mission Frigate to Egypt
 
The sale of a multimission frigate (FREMM) by DCNS to Egypt has been formalized. To respond to the request formulated by Egypt, the sale transaction took shape in a very short time, not compatible with the usual procedures and the construction from scratch of a new vessel. The only solution to ensure on-time delivery iss therefore to deliver to Egypt one of the FREMM originally intended for the French Navy: The Normandie frigate currently in final systems fitting out in Lorient and property of DCNS.

Since January 30, 2015, the French Navy Georges Leygues class anti-submarine frigates Primauguet and Latouche-Treville participate in the combined training "Submarine Command Course 2015" in Norway. Involving a dozen frigates and submarines from several NATO countries (Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Great Britain and France), this annual coalition exercise helps develop the interoperability of European navies in the fields of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and train submarine crews when faced with attacks from surface ships.

According to French daily newspaper Le Monde the agreement between Egypt and France for the procurement of 24 Rafale aircraft from Dassault Aviation, a FREMM multi-mission frigate from DCNS and missiles from MBDA, has been initialed by all parties today. The last step of this contract amounting to more than 5 billion Euros is the official signature by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi and by a French state representative (the President or the minister of defense).

"All the technical recovery activities on the “Pytlivyy” guided missile frigate commanded by the captain 2nd rank Dmitry Dobrynin have come to an end. A scheduled overhaul were performed since May 2014" according to a Russian Navy statement.

The idea of a ship letting 4,200 tonnes, or 4.2 million litres of water into a large space inside its stern may sound crazy, but for the Landing Helicopter Dock, that is exactly what happens when the ship 'docks down'. Docking down allows the ship to get into a position to launch or recover its landing craft, of which it can house four. Canberra’s Engineering Officer, Commander David Walter, explained the process in simple terms.

Lockheed Martin-Led Team Lays Keel of Future USS Wichita Thirteenth Littoral Combat Ship
 
Wichita is a flexible Freedom-variant LCS that will be designed and outfitted with mission systems to conduct a variety of missions including anti-surface warfare, mine countermeasures and submarine warfare. The industry team building Wichita has delivered two ships with six others in various stages of construction and testing. The nation’s first LCS, USS Freedom, completed a U.S. Navy deployment in 2013, and USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) is currently deployed for 16 months to Southeast Asia. These two deployments demonstrate how the ship class is addressing the U.S. Navy’s need for an affordable, highly-networked and modular ship unlike any other in the world.
The Lockheed Martin-led industry team officially laid the keel for the U.S. Navy’s thirteenth Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), the future USS Wichita, in a ceremony held at Marinette Marine Corporation in Marinette, Wisconsin, yesterday. Ship sponsor Mrs. Kate Staples Lehrer completed the time-honored tradition and authenticated the keel of Wichita (LCS 13). Mrs. Lehrer had her initials welded into a sheet of the ship’s steel, which will ultimately be mounted in the ship throughout its entire service.
