Large Patrol Vessel Akitsushima (PLH-32) Enters Japan's Coast Guard Service
 
Japan's Coast Guard (JCG) on Thursday unveiled a new, next-generation patrol ship that will be deployed in anti-piracy, counter-terrorism and regular domestic duties. PLH-32 is a more modern, newer version of PLH 31 Shikishima. With a length of 150m (492 ft) and 9,300 tons full load displacement (the size of a destroyer), these are the largest "Offshore Patrol Vessels" in the world.

Names chosen for the Royal Canadian Navy's new Joint Support Ships
 
Names have been chosen for the Royal Canadian Navy’s two new Joint Support Ships (JSS), which will be built by Vancouver Shipyards Co. Ltd. in North Vancouver, B.C. The ships will be named Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Queenston and HMCS Chateauguay in recognition of the significant battles of Queenston Heights and Chateauguay during the War of 1812.

Royal New Zealand Navy selects KONGSBERGs Penguin anti-ship missile for Seasprite helicopters
 
Defence Minister Dr Jonathan Coleman says the government has approved the purchase of an upgraded and expanded Seasprite helicopter fleet for the New Zealand Defence Force. A total of eight Seasprites (plus two spare airframes) will be purchased from the United States company Kaman Aerospace in a $242 million dollar deal, which includes a training simulator, missiles, and additional components.
KONGSBERG has signed a contract with the New Zealand Defence Force for the delivery of Penguin Mk 2 Mod 7 anti-ship missiles and associated equipment. The missiles will be deployed on the Royal New Zealand Navy new Kaman SH-2G Super Seasprite maritime helicopters.

Iran Launched new "Fateh" class Submarine for its Naval Forces
 
Iran launched a semi-heavy submarine in a bid to boost its naval capabilities in the high seas, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan announced. Iran launched the largest submarine it has ever built into the Gulf & is building a second according to satellite. This is the first time that the Fateh-class submarines that Iran has said it is building have been seen. The first submarine can be seen in the water at the Bostanu shipyard on the Strait of Hormuz in satellite imagery. A second submarine can be seen under construction at the Bandar Anzali Naval Base on the Caspian Sea in Iran in September.

Raytheon's Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) Achieves Initial Operational Capability with USS Kidd
 
The SM-6 tactical missile has reached initial operation capability, the Navy announced today, with SM-6s successfully loaded onboard USS Kidd (DDG 100) in San Diego, Calif. The SM-6 is designed to provide naval vessels with extended range protection against cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and fixed and rotary wing aircraft.

Russian Navy Gets New Carrier-Based MiG-29K/KUB Fighter Jets
 
The Russian navy has taken delivery of its first four series-produced MiG-29K/KUB carrier based fighter jets, the Defense Ministry said Monday. “The MiG aircraft-manufacturing corporation has handed over two MiG-29K single-seat and two MiG-29KUB twin-seat carrier-based fighter aircraft,” a spokesman said.

India begins training 500 Vietnam sailors in submarine warfare
 
India has begun training of some 500 Vietnamese sailors in the art of submarine warfare operations, reported local daily The Times of India Saturday. During talks between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and visiting Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong last Wednesday, it was decided that India will transfer four naval offshore patral vessels to Vietnam under a 100 million U.S. dollar credit line, said the newspaper.
