Raytheon, US Navy complete first phase of RAM Block 2 developmental testing
 
The U.S. Navy completed the first series of developmental and operational testing (DT/OT) of Raytheon Company's Rolling Airframe Missile Block 2. In at-sea tests conducted from the U.S. Navy's Self-Defense Test Ship, RAM Block 2 missiles engaged two targets in tactical dual-salvo scenarios designed to demonstrate the advanced missile's defensive capabilities.

Thales awarded milestone Royal Navy services contract
 
Thales UK has today signed a 10-year contract with the Ministry of Defence (MOD), worth up to £600M, for the in-service support of the Royal Navy’s major sensor systems. The new Sensors Support Optimisation Project (SSOP) builds on the proven success of Thales’s Contractor Logistics Support contract, originally signed in 2003, which has provided support to the Royal Navy’s sonar and electronic warfare systems for the past 10 years.

Several countries interested in buying ex-Spanish Navy Aircraft Carrier Principe de Asturias
 
According to rumors that emerged recently in the Spanish press, the Philippines as well as several Arab countries have expressed interest in purchasing the former Spanish Navy Aircraft Carrier Principe de Asturias. In case of a sale, the contract would include refit and upgrading of the vessel by Spanish shipyard Navantia.

US Navy Successfully Tests RIM-116 Block 2 Rolling Airframe Missile
 
The US Navy successfully completed tests of the Rolling Airframe Block 2 missile at the Navy's Pacific Missile Test Range, May 10. The missiles were launched from a Self Defense Test Ship operated by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme and intercepted turbojet-powered targets emulating enemy anti-ship cruise missiles.

Third Damen Stan Patrol Spa 4207 patrol vessel for Mexican Navy
 
The Mexican Navy has contracted Damen Shipyards Group for the design and material package of a Damen Stan Patrol 4207, including technical assistance. Construction of the vessel will start in the summer of 2013 at ASTIMAR 1 (Tampico), one of the five naval shipyards of Astilleros de la Secretaría de Marina.

U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System Completes First Flight
 
The US Navy's newest unmanned Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft platform, the MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), completed its first flight from Palmdale, Calif. May 22, marking the start of tests which will validate the Northrop Grumman-built system for future fleet operations.

Damen Stan Patrols 5509 for Guardia di Finanza Corp
 
Together with its Italian partner yard Cantiere Navale Vittoria S.p.a., Damen Shipyards are building  two Stan Patrols  5509 to the Italian Guardia di Finanza. This Italian law enforcement agency, deals with financial crime, smuggling Illigal Immigration and narco traffic and maintains a fleet of about 250 vessels.

USS Freedom (LCS 1) Littoral Combat Ship Makes Debut in Singapore
 
USS Freedom (LCS 1) made its debut in Singapore May 14-19, participating in an international trade show and a maritime exercise with regional navies. Freedom also hosted thousands of visitors, from Singaporean citizens to senior government and military officials, during a series of ship tours.

The U.S. Navy accepted delivery of the first Mobile Landing Platform, USNS Montford Point (MLP 1), from General Dynamics-NASSCO on May 14, in San Diego, Calif. The Mobile Landing Platform is a new class of ship and highly flexible platform that will provide capability for large-scale logistics movements such as the transfer of light and heavy vehicles and equipment from sea to shore.

Russia’s newest Baltic Fleet warship, the Project 20380 Boiky corvette, was handed over to the Navy on Thursday, a fleet spokesman said. The 20380 class, designed by the Almaz naval design bureau and built at St. Petersburg's Severnaya Verf shipyard, is optimized for antisubmarine and surface warfare and support for land operations. The class incorporates stealth technology, which has considerably reduced its radar and infrared signatures.

Despite stressing conditions designed to challenge the missile's discrimination capabilities, the SM-3 successfully engaged the target using the sheer kinetic force of a massive collision in space.

Australia renews interest in MQ-4C Triton UAS Unmanned Aircraft System
 
The Australian Ministers for Defence and Defence Materiel announced May 15 that the government of Australia will enter into a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) planning case with the U.S. Navy for the MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). The FMS planning case will help Australian defense officials assess the applicability of Triton’s capabilities to their high-altitude, long-endurance UAS for maritime patrol and other surveillance requirements.

Naming ceremony of fuel cell submarine “U36” for the German Navy in Kiel
 
One of the most modern non-nuclear submarines in the world was named today at the shipyard of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems GmbH, a company of ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions AG, under the name of “U36”. This marks another important milestone in the ongoing shipbuilding programme for the German Navy. U36 is the second boat of the second batch of HDW Class 212A submarines destined for operation in the German Navy. The German town of Plauen has assumed sponsorship for U36. The ultra-modern submarine was named by Silke Elsner, companion to the Mayor.

1st P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft Arrives in India, Indian Navy to receive 2 more P-8Is by end of 2013
 
The first Boeing P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft arrived today, on schedule, at India Naval Station Rajali. The P-8I is one of eight aircraft Boeing is building for India as part of a contract awarded in 2009.

Australia, Sweden sign agreement on submarine design, technology
 
Australia and Sweden have achieved a "significant milestone agreement" relating to Intellectual Property rights for submarine design and technology, Defence Minister Stephen Smith said in a statement on Thursday. According to the joint statement with Sweden's Minister for Defence Karin Enstrom, this followed extensive negotiations between Australia's Defence Materiel Organisation and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.

Saab promotes its "Sea Gripen", a possible naval variant of the Gripen NG fighter jet
 
Besides Brazil, Saab identified future demand for naval fighters in countries like India, Italy and the UK, which, in the coming years will be commissioning new aircraft carriers in their navies. According to Saab, there is a real and viable market for this type of aircraft. Aiming this market, the company is already developing a naval version of JAS-39 Gripen, which aims to be a variant of its newest product, the Gripen NG (Next Generation). This new version was named Sea Gripen.

Under the terms of this MoU both companies agree to jointly explore the market for the integration of MBDA naval missile systems into Lockheed Martin launching systems, plan for all necessary common developments and, more broadly, pursue mutually beneficial opportunities.

"The success of this firing, highlighted by a skin-to-skin intercept, is a direct result of a series of enhancements to what is truly an international missile," said Rick Nelson, vice president of Raytheon Missile Systems' Naval and Area Mission Defense product line.

South Korea and the United States started on Monday two-day joint naval exercises off the east coast involving a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, South Korean media reported. Earlier in the day, the 97,000-ton USS Nimitz (CVN 68) left the southeastern port of Busan for the drills with South Korea's navy in the East Sea near Pohang, the Yonhap news agency quoted a senior military official as saying.
