Indian Navy Commissions Second Kolkata Class Guided Missile Destroyer INS Kochi
 
INS ‘Kochi’ was commissioned by the Hon'ble Defence Minister, Shri Manohar Parrikar, at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, on 30 September 2015. Kochi is the second ship of the Kolkata-class (Project 15A) Guided Missile Destroyers. The contract for three ships of Kolkata class was signed as follow-on of the Delhi Class Destroyers, which were commissioned into the Indian Navy more than a decade ago.

DARPA’s Towed Airborne Lift of Naval Systems (TALONS) Concept Tested at Sea
 
DARPA’s Towed Airborne Lift of Naval Systems (TALONS) research effort recently demonstrated a prototype of a low-cost, fully automated parafoil system designed to extend maritime vessels’ long-distance communications and improve their domain awareness. Towed behind boats or ships, TALONS could carry intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and communications payloads of up to 150 pounds between 500 and 1,500 feet in altitude—many times higher than current ships’ masts—and greatly extend the equipment’s range and effectiveness.

Chinese Navy Fourth Type 071 LPD Amphibious Vessel Started Sea Trials
 
Chinese media recently released pictures showing the fourth People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) Type 071 amphibious transport dock LPD Yimeng Shan (hull number 978) on sea trials. Yimeng Shan was built Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC, the largest shipbuilding group in China) as was the case for the first three Type 071 vessels. It was launched in January this year.

U.S. Navy Announces Further Delays for Gerald R. Ford Aircraft Carrier (CVN 78) Delivery
 
The U.S. Navy announced that the delivery of Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), first ship of the new Ford class of aircraft carriers, will be delayed six to eight weeks as more tests are needed before the vessel can start its sea trials campaign. The original delivery date was set for March 31, 2016.

Australia to Finance the Development of a New Seeker for Kongsberg's Joint Strike Missile
 
On 15 September Norway and Australia signed an agreement where Australia will finance the development of a new capability for the seeker in the Joint Strike Missile (JSM), developed by Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence Systems (KDA). If Australia later decides to procure the JSM, then Norway and Australia will share the cost of integrating the JSM on the F-35.

The US Department of Defence announced Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training is being awarded a $120,400,598 cost-plus-incentive-fee and cost reimbursement modification to previously awarded contract N00024-09-C-6247 to exercise an option for engineering services and support of the AN/BVY-1 Integrated Submarine Imaging System (ISIS).

Future Littoral Combat Ship USS Milwaukee (LCS 5) Completes Acceptance Trial
 
The future USS Milwaukee (LCS 5) successfully concluded its acceptance trial Sept. 18, after completing a series of in-port and underway demonstrations for the Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV).

The acceptance trial is the last significant milestone before delivery of the ship to the Navy, which is planned for October. During the five-day trial, the Navy conducted comprehensive tests of the installed systems.
 

Egypt May Receive Ka-52K Naval Helicopters for its 2 Mistral class LHD as Part of Deal with Russia
 
According to Russian state owned news agency TASS, Russia and Egypt have signed an agreement on supplies of fifty helicopters of the Ka-52 Alligator family and Moscow does not rule out delivery of the deck-based version of these helicopters. The Ka-52K is the deck-based version of the Ka-52 Alligator combat helicopter initially developed for Mistral LHD ordered in France in 2011.

The French presidency just announced that Egypt will acquire the two Mistral LHDs originally intended for Russia. "President of the French Republic met with the President Abdel Fattah Al Sissi. They agreed on the principle and terms of the purchase by Egypt of two Mistral class amphibious vessels" according to the official statement of the French presidency.

French Navy Super Étendard Modernisé Fighters and ATL2 MPA in AM39 ASuW Exercise
 
On September 12, 2015, two French Navy (Marine Nationale) Super Étendard Modernisés (SEM) carrier-borne strike fighters from Flottile 17F and one ATL2 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) from Flotille 21F launched some AM39 anti-ship missiles against training targets at sea. The launch from the SEM was simultaneous as you can see in the picture below.

The French Navy took delivery of its 15th NH90 NFH “Caiman Marine” helicopter. This event took place in Marignane (Airbus Helicopters Facility) where the helicopter was built in presence of representatives of the French Navy and the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA). This helicopter is the first aircraft delivered in Final Radar Configuration standard (FRC).

The U.S. Navy marked a unique milestone last week with the activation of Aegis Combat Systems on both the oldest, and the newest DDG 51 class destroyers. The future USS John Finn (DDG 113) achieved "light off" of its Aegis Combat System on Sept. 8, at the Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss, while USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) achieved light off on Sept 5 as part of the DDG Modernization program combat systems upgrade at BAE in Norfolk.

U.S. Navy Coastal Riverine Group 2 has taken ownership of the first two of 12 Mark VI Patrol Boats, in Portsmouth, Sept. 8. The MK VI, an 85-foot combatant craft, will provide a persistent capability to patrol shallow littoral areas for the purpose of force protection of friendly and coalition forces as well as critical infrastructure.

Asterix into an Auxiliary Oil Replenishment (AOR) ship for the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) interim supply ship capability.

French Navy Falcon 50M Maritime Surveillance Aircraft Deployed Beyond Arctic Circle
 
The French Navy announced that from August 26 to September 1st, a Dassault Falcon 50M Maritime Surveillance Aircraft belonging to Flottille 24F was deployed to Kangerlussuaq in western Greenland with a Royal Danish Air Force Bombardier Challenger CL-604. This deployement was a first for the French Navy naval aviation.

Russia’s heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky (Kirov class) has been docked for repairs in the Murmansk Region in north-west Russia, Head of the Northern Fleet’s press service Captain 1st Rank Vadim Serga said on Monday. The ship will be repaired at the 82nd shipyard in the settlement of Roslyakovo, he added.
