The Australian Navy will equip its Hobart-class Air Warfare Destroyers with the Raytheon SM-2 Block IIIB missiles. According to the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency, the State Department has approved the Foreign Military Sale of the missiles with a cost of USD301 million.

The Australian Government has requested up to 80 Raytheon RIM-66M-09 SM-2 Block IIIB STANDARD Vertical Launching Tactical All-Up missiles, up to 15 MK 97 SM-2 Block IIIB Guidance Sections, MK 13 MOD 0 Vertical Launching System Canisters, operator manuals and technical documentation, US Government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services.

The new missiles will enhance the Australian Navy’s area air-defence capabilities and complement the SM-2 Block IIIA missiles of the Perry-class frigates.

The three Hobart-class Air Warfare Destroyers of Australia will incorporate the phased-array AN/SPY-1D(V) radar, which along with the missiles it will be able to engage aerial targets at distances over 150 km and altitudes up to 65,000 ft.
