Russia to lay down the first next generation Kalina-class diesel-electric submarine in 2018
 
The fifth-generation lead Kalina-class diesel-electric submarine will be laid down in 2018, a source in the Russian Armed Forces said. "Of course, the Kalina project is actual for us. This project is expected to be prosperous. We will lay down the lead submarine in 2018," the source said.

Lada class Diesel Electric Submarine (SSK) Project 677. The future Kalina project is set to be equipped with an air-independent propulsion unit and combine the best characteristics of the Project 636 and Project 677 submarines.
     
According to the source, the new diesel-electric submarine will be laid down at the Admiralty Wharves Shipyard in St. Petersburg in northwest Russia.

As it was reported earlier, the construction of fifth-generation diesel-electric submarines for Russia’s Northern and Baltic Fleets is planned to start after a series of Project 636.3 submarines designed for the Pacific Fleet is built.

It was reported earlier that Russia was developing the fifth-generation Kalina-class diesel-electric submarine. The submarine is planned to be equipped with an air-independent propulsion unit and combine the best characteristics of the Project 636 and Project 677 submarines.
