The
fifth Project 636.3 (NATO reporting name: Improved Kilo) diesel-electric
submarine, the Veliky Novgorod, built for the Russian Navy’s
Black Sea Fleet, has been set afloat by the Admiralty Wharfs Shipyard
in St. Petersburg, according to a TASS reporter on site.

"Today, we are launching the fifth submarine
of the series, the Veliky Novgorod, for the Black Sea Fleet,"
Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief Alexander Fedotenkov said during the
launching ceremony.
As was reported in the press, the sixth submarine in the family, the
Kolpino, is planned for launching in May 2016. In all, the Black Sea
Fleet is to receive six Project 636.3 Varshavyanka-class submarines.
The Russian Navy operates a fleet of four Project 636.3 submarines.
The lead ship, the Novorossiisk, was delivered in August 2014, the second
one, the Rostov-on-Don, on December 30, 2014, the third ship of the
family, the Stary Oskol, was received in July 2015 and the fourth submarine
in the series, the Krasnodar, was handed over to the Navy on November
5, 2015.
In December 2015, the Rostov-on-Don delivered a missile attack on the
Russia-banned Islamic State terrorist group in the Syrian province of
al-Raqqa from the Mediterranean Sea - the first strike of the kind in
the Russian submarine fleet’s history.
