Russian Navy Landing Ship Ivan Gren LST Sea Trials On Hold Following Degaussing System Failure

The large landing ship Ivan Gren of project 11711 built by Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad has to suspend factory tests, the Vpered newspaper of the enterprise reported. "The Ivan Gren returned to the shipyard as it had to suspend factory tests. By the end of the month (of October) a tracer commission has to upgrade the degaussing system of the warship," it said.

The newspaper quoted Chief Constructor Igor Leonov as saying "the warship needs additional work to improve the operation of the degaussing system." "The decision on which technology is to be used and which volume of work the operation demands and how long the tests of the warship will be suspended will be made not earlier than October 30," he said.

Leonov said problems in the operation of degaussing system were not the fault of Yantar which "accomplished all construction stages according to documentation." "At the initial stage mistakes were made in calculating the magnetic field of the warship and now it is necessary to adjust the degaussing system," he said.

The Ivan Gren big landing ship had its keel laid in December 2004 and was floated in May 2012. Factory tests began in the second half of June. The warship has to be handed over to the Russian Navy by the end of 2016. The defense ministry ordered Yantar to build yet another warship of the project - the Petr Morgunov. It has to be passed on to the Navy in 2018.
