The Project 11356 (NATO reporting name: Admiral Grigorovich-class) Admiral Makarov frigate built by the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad in west Russia and armed with precision missile weapons will join the Russian Black Sea Fleet in November 2017, the Defense Ministry’s press office said. [Navy Recognition comment: The vessel was originaly expected to be delivered in June, according to previous reports].

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has been awarded a $3 billion contract for the detail design and construction of the amphibious assault ship Bougainville (LHA 8). Ingalls was awarded the original long-lead material contract for the third ship in the America (LHA 6) class on June 30, 2016.

US Navy SM-6 test displays missile's improved capability
The U.S. Navy successfully executed a test of the surface-to-air Standard Missile-6 Block IA (SM-6 Blk IA) at the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), New Mexico, on June 7. This test demonstrated SM-6 Blk IA’s improved capabilities and integration with the Aegis weapon system. The event was the third of three required flight tests successfully executed at WSMR. At-sea testing of the SM-6 Blk IA is planned to commence in the fall of 2017.

Russia is set to resume the construction of Project 12322 Zubr-class air-cushion landing craft capable of delivering three main battle tanks weighing up to 150 tons or 10 armored personnel carriers with marines to the unequipped coast. The new Zubrs will supersede the Project 21820 Dugon-class air-cavern landing craft having a lower load-carrying capacity. The construction of the first all-Russian Zubr ships is to begin in 2018, newspaper Izvestia reported.

Today, the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Alliance celebrated the Government’s provisional acceptance of the first destroyer, Hobart, at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia. Hobart is the first of three destroyers being built and integrated by the AWD Alliance which comprises the Department of Defence, Raytheon Australia and ASC with support from Navantia. In the coming months, Hobart will transit from Adelaide to Sydney where she will be commissioned into service by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) later this year.

The Nizhny Novgorod Steamship Shipyard floated two latest search-and-rescue boats of project 23040 for the Russian Navy to renew its search-and-rescue capabilities. They became the 19th and 20th boats out of a total of 22 units built for the Northern, Pacific, Black Sea, Baltic fleets and the Caspian flotilla, the press service of the Russian defense ministry said.

The next generation frigates with increased displacement and reinforced armament suite will be based on the Project 22350 frigates, the President of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Alexey Rakhmanov told TASS. Russia`s Minister of Defense, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu said previously that the Project 22350 frigates would form the Russian Navy`s backbone.

A Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-8A Poseidon has completed its first deployment to Royal Malaysian Air Force Base (RMAF) Butterworth as part of Operation GATEWAY. The Poseidon was deployed to Malaysia in support of the Operational Test and Evaluation of the P-8A as it is introduced to service. This deployment was a key milestone on the path to declaring Initial Operating Capability (IOC) for the aircraft and its system over the next 12 months.
