"The Russian Navy`s 'Admiral Essen' frigate and 'Krasnodar' submarine conducted four launches of the Kalibr cruise missiles from the Eastern Mediterranean against the IS terroristic grouping`s [forbidden in Russia] objects near Palmira. The assigned targets were hit," the MoD said in a statement. The 'Krasnodar' submarine launched the SLCMs while staying submerged. The targets were the shelters to the east of Palmira that covered terrorists` manpower and heavy vehicles redeployed from Raqqa.
Russia`s MoD pointed out that "the military authorities of the United States of America, Turkey and Israel were timely informed about the launches of the cruise missiles via the functional channels of interaction". "The successful accomplishing of the task has confirmed the Navy`s high combat readiness, as well as the one of the surface and underwater combatants` crews directly involved in the missile launches," MoD added. "Russia`s Navy has demonstrated its ability to use high-precision weapon systems effectively within the shortest time possible after the receipt of the order," the MoD added. The Defense Minister, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu had informed Russia`s President Vladimir Putin about the successful launches of the 3M-14 missiles against the IS (forbidden in Russia) terrorists in Syria on the evening of May 30, the Press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov said. |

"Shoigu reported Putin on the series of the successful Kalibr missile launches by the submarine from the Mediterranean Sea against the IS [forbidden in Russia] targets in Syria," he said.
According to the footage published by the Zvezda TV channel on its official YouTube page on the morning of May 31, the 'Admiral Essen' frigate launched two 3M-14 missiles from two cells of the 3S-14 Kalibr vertical launch system. The 'Krasnodar' diesel-electric submarine also conducted two launches. Since October 2015, Russia`s Navy has launched 58 3M-14 Kalibr missiles with most of the launches (44 SLCMs) conducted by the Caspian flotilla`s ships in October-November 2015. In August 2016, two Project 21631 corvettes, 'Serpukhov' and 'Zeleny Dol' launched three cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea. In November 2016, at least three missiles were fired by the 'Admiral Grigorovich' Project 11356 frigate from the Mediterranean. In December 2015, the 'Rostov-on-Don' Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine used four more 3M-14 missiles while staying submerged from the Eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. The Project 11356 frigates are designed to conduct strikes against enemy`s surface and underwater combatants in blue and green waters and to repel air attacks both separately and within a naval task force. The frigates are armed with a 100 mm naval gun, surface-to-air and attack missile weapons and torpedoes. They can store a Ka-27-type helicopter or its modifications. The Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine is the 3rd generation underwater combatant that is a further development of the Project 636 ships. It features a low acoustic signature. The Project 636.3 submarine is fitted with Kalibr high-precision missile system and updated electronic equipment. © Copyright 2017 TASS. All rights reserved.
