Russia will build two all-purpose amphibious assault ships with a CODAG power plant by late 2026, a source in Russia’s defense industry told TASS. Kamov Ka-52K (NATO reporting name: Hokum-B) helicopters will form the mainstay of their air wings, the source added.

"The R&D work on the helicopter carriers will begin in 2018. The construction of the lead ship is planned to start in 2020 and it is expected to join the Navy in 2024. The sole serial ship is planned to be built in 2022 and delivered in 2026," the source said.

As the source said, "the helicopter carriers will have a CODAG power plant" with the diesel operating at the main engine and the gas turbine designed for power augmentation.

According to the source, "Ka-52K helicopters will form the basis of the ships’ air wings." The delivery of the helicopters and the ships will be synchronized. The ships will carry Ka-27 (Helix), Ka-29 (Helix-B) and Ka-31 helicopters as well.

The source also said that a decision on the prime contractor had not been taken yet but the 2018-2025 state armament program envisaged the construction of the helicopter carriers.

TASS does not have any official confirmation of this information.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said at the HeliRussia 2017 exhibition that the first Russian-made all-purpose amphibious assault ship would be built approximately by 2022. He did not give more details.

Russia’s Navy showed a model of the amphibious assault ship Priboy with a displacement of 14,000 tons at the Army 2015 international exhibition. It was said at that time that the ship could carry Ka-27 and Ka-29 helicopters and would be armed with the Klinok (SA-N-9 Gauntlet) and Pantsyr-M (SA-22 Greyhound) air defense systems and the A-190 100mm gun.
The ship will be able to carry up to 500 persons, 60 items of military hardware and two Serna or four Dyugon boats.
Later, the mockup of the ship Priboy with Ka-52 helicopter models was shown.
