The Russian Navy`s Project 11356 'Admiral Essen' and 'Admiral Grigorovich' guided missile frigates and the Project 636.3 'Krasnodar' diesel-electric submarine have destroyed the Islamic State (IS) terrorist grouping`s large weapon and munition depots in Syria using the 3M-14 Kalibr sea-launched cruise missiles (SLCM), according to Russia`s Ministry of Defense (MoD).

"Staying in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Russian Navy`s 'Admiral Essen' and 'Admiral Grigorovich' frigates and the 'Krasnodar' diesel-electric submarine have launched six Kalibr cruise missiles against the IS` objects in Syria," the Ministry said in a statement.

The massive instantaneous missile strike resulted in the destroying of the IS terrorists` command posts and large weapon and munition depots in the vicinities of the Akerbat habited locality (Hama province). An arsenal of the terrorists detonated after the hit by a cruise missile.

The MoD emphasized that the 'Krasnodar' submarine had conducted the missile launches staying submerged. "The remaining IS [forbidden in Russia] terrorists and objects were eliminated by the air strikes conducted by Russia`s Aerospace Forces` (VKS) bombers," the Ministry added.

The MoD pointed out that Turkey and Israel had been timely informed about the airstrikes via the interaction channels.

According to the footage issued by the Zvezda and Russia Today TV channels on their YouTube official webpages, each of the combatants fired two 3M-14 missiles with approximately 5 sec intervals.

The MoD also said that the IS terroristic grouping was also redeploying its militants to the Hama province in Syria, where they were establishing command posts and weapon and munition depots in large buildings. "Using the hours of darkness and rugged terrain, the terrorists are redeploying the militants along various routes to the Hama province, where they are establishing command posts and weapon and munition depots in large buildings," the Ministry pointed out in the statement.

The MoD added that the command of Russia`s contingency in Syria had organized the round-the-clock monitoring over the terrorists` retreat routes and deconcentrating areas using all the reconnaissance means, while the unveiled objects of the terrorists were being destroyed by high-precision weapons and Russia`s VKS` aviation.

The Ministry added that the IS (forbidden in Russia) formations were continuing their efforts to leave Raqqa heading Palmira via so-called 'southern channel' during the last week.

Since October 2015, Russia`s Navy has launched 64 3M-14 Kalibr missiles with most of the launches (44 SLCMs) conducted by the Caspian flotilla`s ships in October-November 2015. In August 2016, two Project 21631 corvettes, 'Serpukhov' and 'Zeleny Dol' launched three cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea. In November 2016, at least three missiles were fired by the 'Admiral Grigorovich' Project 11356 frigate from the Mediterranean. In December 2015, the 'Rostov-on-Don' Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine used four more 3M-14 missiles, while staying submerged from the Eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. On May 30, 2017, the 'Admiral Essen' frigate and the 'Krasnodar' submarine launched four more 3M-14 SLCMs against IS` objects near Palmira.

The Project 11356 frigates are designed to conduct strikes against enemy`s surface and underwater combatants in blue and green waters and to repel air attacks both separately and within a naval task force. The frigates are armed with a 100 mm naval gun, surface-to-air and attack missile weapons and torpedoes. They can store a Ka-27-type helicopter or its modifications.

The Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine is the 3rd generation underwater combatant that is a further development of the Project 636 ships. It features a low acoustic signature. The Project 636.3 submarine is fitted with Kalibr high-precision missile system and updated electronic equipment.
