Last Two of Six Russia-Built Project 636.1 Submarines Commissioned with Vietnamese Navy
 
The flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam has been hoisted aboard two Russian-built Project 636.1 (NATO reporting name: Improved Kilo-class) submarines in a ceremony held at the Cam Ranh naval base and attended by Vietnamese Defense Minister Nguy•n Xuan Phuc and the National Defense Ministry and Navy leadership.

The Vietnamese Navy named the submarines Da Nang (hull number HQ186) and Ba Ria Vung Tau (HQ-187). The two have been the last of the Project 636 six-ship batch ordered by Vietnam in Russia. Earlier, the Vietnamese Navy commissioned the submarines Ha Noi (HQ182), Ho Chi Minh City (HQ183), Hai Phong (HQ184) and Khanh Hoa (HQ185).

Russian official arms exporter Rosoboronexport and Vietnam’s government signed the contract for the six submarines and crew training to the tune of about $2 billion in late 2009. The delivery of the ships built by the Admiralty Wharfs in St. Petersburg commenced in 2013 and has been completed in January this year. The submarines were delivered in the standard layout, including the Club (SS-N-27 Sizzler) missile system.
