Kawasaki Heavy Industries Launched the 10th Soryu-class SSK SS-510 Shoryu for the JMSDF
 
The 10th Soryu-class SSK, SS-510 Shoryu, was launched at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries shipyard in Kobe on November 6th. The Soryu-class diesel-electric submarines are being built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).

SS-510 Shoryu is the 28th submarine built by Kawasaki after the war and the 10th Soryu-class submarine built for the JMSDF (the 5th built by Kawaski, the other five ones having been built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries). Shoryu's keel was laid in January 2015 and is set to be delivered to the JMSDF in March 2018.

The keel for the first submarine in the class, Soryu (SS-501), was laid down in March 2005. It was launched in December 2007 and commissioned in March 2009.

The latest Soryu class SSK SS-508 Sekiryu was commissioned with the MJSDF on 13 March 2017.

All submarines of the class are named after dragons. Soryū means Blue Dragon, Hakuryū (2nd in the class) White Dragon, Sekiryū (8th in the class) Red Dragon. Exact translation of the name of the latest submarine, Shoryū, is still unknown: According to one of our Japanese source (Twitter user @obiekt_JP), the Hiragana name was announced, but the Kanji name has not been announced yet, so the origin of naming has not yet been found out. Potential candidates for Kanji names are "翔龍(Soar Dragon)" or "昇龍(Rising Dragon)" or "祥龍(Fortune Dragon)".

Update: The name of the submarine is "翔龍(Soar Dragon)" according to local media.

Twelve Soryu-class submarines are planned for the JMSDF. The eleventh and twelfth submarines will feature improved underwater endurance thanks to lithium-ion batteries. The class is an improved version of the Oyashio-class submarine. Soryu-class submarines are the world's largest conventionally powered submarines. They have an excellent operational track record and are equipped with state-of-the art technologies, including air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems that enable them to remain fully submerged for long periods of time, and advanced stealth technologies that make them more difficult to detect.
