Navy to Upgrade its Ship Launched Mid-Range SAM Missiles
Lieutenant
Commander of the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Gholam Reza Khadem Biqam
said the Navy is currently conducting different tests to improve the
performance of its mid-range missiles. “We have gained good results
from our tests on the mid-range Mehrab and Ra’d missiles in previous
wargames and these missiles have been mounted on Navy warships,”
Khadem Biqam told FNA, reiterating the new tests are being conducted
"to upgrade Mehrab and Ra’d missiles".
In
January 2012, the Iranian Navy test-fired a new home-made mid-range
surface-to-air missile, called "Mehrab", from an Iranian Navy
"Gorz" missile-launching frigate.
“Air
defense has two aspects; first regional defense that the country’s
(Khatam ol-Anbia) Air Defense Base is in charge of and another one is
point-to-point defense when it comes to Naval units because when a vessel
is moving in the sea, it should be capable of defending itself against
air and missile attacks or it will be destroyed right at the beginning
(of any given conflict), hence it should be capable of defending itself
against the enemy’s fighter jets and missiles,” Rear Admiral
Khadem Biqam said.
"In the Islamic Republic of Iran's Navy, point-to-point defense
is given vital importance," he stressed, adding that the Navy has
employed various weapons and defense systems, including machineguns,
missiles and systems with different ranges, to improve this capability.
