Construction of Type 001A, China's second Aircraft Carrier has started
 
The Secretary of Liaoning province Communist Party, Min Wang, confirmed that China was at work on a home-built aircraft carrier at a shipyard in Dalian. This aircraft carrier would be based on Chinese Navy (PLAN) existing one (16 Liaoning) but modified and improved to best match the PLAN's needs. This new aircraft carrier is reportedly called Type 001A.

USNS John Glenn (MLP 2) Successfully Completes Builder's Trials
 
The USNS John Glenn (MLP 2) successfully completed Builder's Sea Trials Jan. 13. During the week of sea trials the shipbuilder, General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO), conducted comprehensive tests to demonstrate the performance of all of the ship's major systems.

Joint High-Speed Vessel USNS Spearhead departs on Maiden Deployment
 
The U.S. Navy's first joint high-speed vessel departed Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Ft. Story today on its maiden deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet Area of Responsibility. USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1) is expected to remain in U.S. 6th Fleet until May 2014 and sail to the U.S. 4th Fleet area of responsibility through the end of fiscal year 2014. While deployed, the ship will undergo planned experimentation and testing to determine the ship's capabilities.

The MU90 lightweight torpedo acclaimed by the Royal Australian Navy
 
On 14 August 2013, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) successfully conducted the world’s first firing of a “war shot” MU90 Lightweight Torpedo. The MU90 torpedo is developed by the European Economic Interest Group EUROTORP (formed by DCNS, Thales and WASS). ANZAC Class Frigate HMAS Stuart fired the torpedo which detected, classified and then engaged the submerged target, representing a small displacement submarine.

Raytheon & L-3 demonstrate new ship protection system with TALON laser-guided rocket
 
Raytheon Company and L-3 Communications successfully fired Raytheon TALON laser-guided rockets from an L-3 remote weapon station using an LAU-68 launcher. Damen (DSNS) starts steel cutting for SIGMA 10514 PKR Frigate for Indonesia Navy (TNI AL)
 
In June 2012, the Ministry of Defence of Indonesia and Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) signed the contract for the first SIGMA 10514 PKR Frigate. In accordance with the agreed planning for the construction of this frigate, the Steel Cutting Ceremony took place simultaneously on 15 January 2014 at PT PAL (Persero) Shipyard in Surabaya (Indonesia) and DSNS in Vlissingen (the Netherlands).

The Missile Defense Agency awarded Raytheon Company an undefinitized contract action (UCA) valued at $156 million for the procurement of Standard Missile-3 Block IB guided missiles.
The U.S. Navy announced today that the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) will replace USS George Washington (CVN 73) in Japan and become part of the U.S. 7th Fleet forward-deployed naval forces (FDNF) in Yokosuka, Japan. A pair of new missile corvettes have completed acceptance trials and will enter service in Russia’s Caspian Flotilla in the first quarter of this year, the Southern Military District said Monday. The two ships, the Grad Sviyazhsk and Uglich, are the first in the new Buyan-M class and are equipped with anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles.

This stunning 87 m vessel, named RNOV ‘Shabab Oman’, is destined to become the flagship of the Royal Navy of Oman to continue the role of the current STV of the same name in promoting cultural interaction and to help ‘spread peace and harmony amongst nations’. Shabab Oman is a full square rigger and will have an amazing 2,700 m² sail area.

New China Coast Guard patol vessel enters service amid tensions around Senkaku islands
 
A newly built patrol vessel was commissioned for the China Coast Guard (CCG) South China Sea fleet on Friday. The CCG-3401, with a displacement of 4,000 tonnes, is a multi-functional vessel equipped with advanced law enforcement facilities and is able to meet the need for marine law enforcement tasks, according to the Chinese State Oceanic Administration.

Ultimately, the new MBDA-made land attack cruise missile will provide the FREMM type frigates with a unique capability for a European surface vessel: Destroying targets located several hundrerds of kilometers inland.

Operation Serval: 3,000 flight hours for French Navy ATL2 MPA over Mali
 
The French Navy announced that its ATL 2 Maritime Patrol Aircraft belonging to 23F and 21F units deployed for operation in Mali just passed the 3,000 flight hours. This achievement coincides with the 1 anniversary of Operation Serval, the French military operation in Mali. Since the beginning and without interruption the "maritime patrol" component of the French Navy is fully involved above the Malian theater.

According to our sources, the ship (who will be named Kalaat Beni-Abbes) will then be towed to its final completion site of the shipyard Fincantieri in Muddzhiano (La Spezia)

It covers the design and construction of three multi-purpose ocean-going ships, 65 metres long and displacing around 1500 tons, to be delivered in 2015 and 2016. The ships are intended for operation overseas.
