Italian Navy Fired MBDA Aster 30 SAM From Orizzonte class Frigate in Missile Defence Exercise

The Italian Navy vessel, ITS Andrea Doria, fired an MBDA Aster 30 missile during a test at the Scottish Hebrides Firing Range. As part of the "At Sea Demonstration 2015" (ASD15) exercise, the Orrizonte-class frigate fired the missile while protecting a US vessel that was providing area air defence to the naval force.

The exercise, which was organized by the Maritime Theatre Missile Defence Forum (MTMD Forum), focused on the interoperability of the platforms. Several missiles were fired from different vessels, against targets simulating a variety of threats. Besides MTMD Forum, OCCAR supported the activity, being responsible for the in-service support, by working on the technical preparations, simulation forecasts, risk reduction tests, onboard firing assistance, data recording and results analysis. It was also responsible for the procurement of the unique Italian munition equipped with UK compliant telemetry equipment.

UKROBORONPROM State Enterprise “SpetsTehnoEksport” provides a supply of European production protective systems for small armored artillery boat "Gurza-M", ordered by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, is produced by the plant "Leninska kuznya". This kitting provides efficient reflection of the enemy attacks and will protect the vessel. In future, exporters are planning to supply these systems for the construction of series of small armored artillery boats.ITS Andrea Doria, first of two Orrizonte-class air-defence destroyer

The North Atlantic sea conditions were "sea state 6", which are considered to be very rough. The Principal Anti Air Missile System (PAAMS) performed extremely well. The system was developed by MBDA to provide self, local and fleet area defence, integrating the Aster 15 and Aster 30 family of missiles. It has been selected by France, Italy and the UK, which uses it as Sea Viper on the Horizon, Orrizonte and Type 45 destroyers, respectively. That proved the system's capability to be integrated with various command and control systems, and multi-function radars.

The Aster 30 missiles weigh 450 kg. Thrust is provided by a solid propellant, two-stage propulsion, which gives them a maximum speed of Mach 4.5, a range of more than 100 km, at a maximum altitude of 20 km. They feature an active RF seeker, with capabilities against stealthy targets. They are capable of destroying the full range of aerial targets, such as supersonic or subsonic missiles, anti-radiation missiles, fighter jets, helicopters and UAVs.
