The following demonstrations will be showcased at the 2014 Navy Sea
Air Space Exposition:
CUBIC 2014 Navy Sea-Air-Space PORTFOLIO – CALS LCS Courseware
Solution
Cubic Advanced Learning Solutions (CALS) has created a virtual shipboard
environment that can be navigated through and interacted with as a game.
The lifelike setting is augmented with situations where students learn,
practice, apply, and retain training content under the guidance of instructors,
or with mentoring from virtual avatars and an Intelligent Tutoring System.
Students learn through experience within the context of a virtual environment,
which provides instruction over the course of a realistically structured
mission-driven deployment that orients sailors for future operations
before ever reporting to duty.
The Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division has partnered
with CALS to create a demonstration of the Navy’s new Littoral
Combat Ship (LCS) virtual training program. The demonstration is built
into the latest generation of gaming technology to showcase the power
and potential of the LCS program’s Immersive Virtual Shipboard
Environment (IVSE).
The LCS program is the first of its kind to incorporate an immersive
synthetic environment with virtual “on-the-job” training
through mentor avatars. CALS’ effective and compelling training
solutions use immersive, cutting-edge synthetic three-dimensional (3D)
environments to dramatically improve learning retention and performance.
CUBIC 2014 Navy Sea-Air-Space PORTFOLIO – CALS Counter-IED Hands
On-Training
CALS worked with Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) professionals to
provide an immersive and interactive virtual training program to counter-IED
threats and provide the most realistic and accurate training to EOD
personnel. The demonstration is built using the Unreal engine to showcase
the potential of portable virtual training in a highly immersive gaming
environment. While the narration and sequencing of the scenario will
occur from a 60-inch television, the trainees will use iPads to interact
with the environment.
As trainees play the game, an Intelligent Tutoring System collects performance
data for each learner, compares the learners’ performance to the
standard, and then provides feedback. The Intelligent Tutoring System
shows incorrect actions and related consequences, recommending specific
remedial training, if appropriate. This optimizes the learning experience
by addressing each individual’s training needs.
CUBIC 2014 Navy Sea-Air-Space PORTFOLIO – CALS Safety & Operational
Inspection Trainer
CALS is enabling a safer workforce through workplace driven safety and
operational inspection training applications. These training applications
are used to educate workers on acceptable operational and regulatory
standards for workplace environments, and what ensures maximal operational
and functional conditions. The application of these training aids is
not limited to a local workforce; it is also relevant in training regulatory
agents and quality inspectors how to properly inspect a workplace to
the required standard.
The CALS program team is made up of experienced instructional systems
designers, game development software engineers, 3D artists, industrial-organizational
psychologists, and retired military that now serve as their Subject
Matter Experts.
Attendees may view these newest innovations at the Cubic exhibit,
located in the Gaylord National Convention Center, Booth #1027.
