Kongsberg
introduces some "armed to the teeth" LCS concepts at Sea-Air-Space
2014
At
the Sea-Air-Space 2014 Exposition, Norwegian company Kongsberg is presenting
scale models of both types of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) fitted with
unique ASUW configurations. The conceptual Freedom class LCS is fitted
with 12x NSMs and the conceptual Independence class LCS is fitted with
18x NSMs.
The Freedom
class LCS on Kongsberg booth at Sea-Air-Space 2014 features 12 NSM anti-ship
missiles in 2x6 configuration.
According
to a Kongsberg representative at the exposition, the two concepts are
Kongsberg's vision of what could be a future LCS surface weapons package
focused on long range capabilities.
The Independence
class LCS on Kongsberg booth at Sea-Air-Space 2014 features 18 NSM anti-ship
missiles in 3x6 configuration.
Naval
Strike Missile
When searching for missiles for its new frigates and coastal corvettes,
the Royal Norwegian Navy studied thoroughly existing missiles on the
market and the planned upgrades of these. None of these missiles were
found to satisfy the requirements of a modern navy well into 2015 and
beyond. It was therefore decided to develop a completely new missile
based on latest technology, the NSM.
NSM is a fifth generation long range precision strike missile already
chosen by the Royal Norwegian Navy for its new frigates and new coastal
corvettes and by the Polish Navy for use on its new coastal artillery
installations.
