Thales Captas-1 Towed Sonar Tested Aboard CNIM's L-CAT Landing Catamaran

During the Euronaval 2016 press tour held last month, Navy Recognition learned that Thales recently partnered with French company CNIM to test the Captas-1 towed sonar aboard the L-Cat landing catamaran. The test demonstrated how Captas-1 may be deployed from compact platforms as well as the ability of the L-CAT design to conduct other missions than amphibious operations.

Unveiled at Euronaval 2014, the Captas-1 is the smallest member of the Captas family: this single ceramic ring configuration uses the same technological building blocks as the Captas-2 (typically fitted on corvettes) and Captas-4 (typically fitted on ASW frigates), which are in service with several NATO countries and have made this product family the worldwide benchmark in low-frequency variable-depth sonars. With its all electric reeling system, the compact, lightweight Captas-1 array is easy to deploy from smaller vessels.

Thales has developed this high-performance sonar suite specifically for small surface combatants and patrol vessels, demonstrating the company's ability to provide innovative, cost-effective ways for naval forces all over the world to better protect their nations' sovereign interests and achieve an operational advantage over underwater threats.

The L-CAT is an innovative, fast catamaran landing craft developed by CNIM to meet the needs of the most modern amphibious forces. It can conduct shore-to-shore missions or deploy from the well deck of LHD and LPD amphibious ships.

The L-CAT has been in service since 2011 in the French Navy and has proven its ability to support the French Armed Forces on a global scale during military and civilian operations. In April 2015, the L-CAT has been a key asset for the French Navy during a high-risk rescue operation for stranded civilians in Yemen. The speed and the beaching capabilities of the L-CAT were critical to mission success and 44 nationals were taken out of harm’s way.

The Egyptian Navy recently became the second customer for CNIM's L-CAT.
