The Type
052D "Kunming" class (Nato designation: Luyang III) is the
latest generation of guided-missile destroyer (DDG) of the Chinese Navy.
It is based on its predecessor, the Type 052C DDG and likely shares
the same hull. However the Type 052D incorporates many improvements
in terms of design as well as sensors and weapons fit. This new class
of vessel is considered as the Chinese equivalent to the American AEGIS
destroyers. Type 052D destroyers are fitted with the latest generation of Chinese phased array radar. The four arrays on each vessel are larger (and likely more powerful) than those found on the previous generation Type 052C destroyers. The size of these new arrays explains the slightly modified design of the bridge structure. Type 052D is also fitted with a new, larger main gun (130mm) and a new generation of vertical launch system capable of launching different types of missiles unlike the circular, cold launch system fitted on Type 052C. This new class of powerful Destroyer undoubtly illustrates the PLAN's ambition in becoming a true blue water navy and a force to be reckoned with on the 7 seas. |

Same
general layout as Type 052C, with slightly larger and higher bridge
which explains the larger displacement of Type 052D despite the two
types almost share the same hull. Type 052D features an improved stealth
design compared to its predecesor. |
