Fincantieri Delivers Second General Purpose FREMM Frigate Rizzo to the Italian Navy
The frigate “Rizzo” was delivered today to the Italian Navy at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia). It is the sixth vessel of the FREMM program – Multi Mission European Frigates – commissioned to Fincantieri within the international Italian-French program, coordinated by OCCAR (the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation). Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (51% Fincantieri and 49% Leonardo) is the prime contractor for Italy in the FREMM program, which envisions the building of 10 units, all already ordered.

The Northern Fleet’s survey vessel left the F.V. Nitrofanov Dock ahead of schedule, having sat there since mid-January this year, according to USC’s press release.

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide its Lithium-ion Fault Tolerant (LiFT) battery system for the Semi-Autonomous Hydrographic Reconnaissance Vehicle (SAHRV), a small, portable underwater vehicle (UUV). GA-EMS is part of a team working with the Department of Defense to design, fabricate, deliver, and conduct at-sea testing of the LiFT battery system for use on the SAHRV platform. The SAHRV UUV is intended for shallow water surveillance to scan, detect and identify mines and other obstacles.

A recent video report by CCTV 7 shows Type 052D (NATO reporting name Luyang III class) guided missile destroyer (DDG) Xining (hull number 117) conducting its first live firing exercise in the Yellow Sea. Xining is the fifth and latest vessel of the class. It joined the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) in January this year and belongs to the North Sea Fleet.

The Royal Navy frigate HMS Sutherland is escorting two Russian warships which are sailing through the English Channel this weekend. The Type 23 frigate located the two Russian ships in the early hours of Friday morning [14 Apr 17] as they sailed through the North Sea towards the Dover Straits. The Steregushchiy-class corvettes, Soobrazitelny and Boiky, were joined later in the afternoon by a Russian support tanker and an ocean-going tug.

The U.S. Navy held a keel laying and authentication ceremony for the future USS Cincinnati (LCS 20) at Austal USA’s shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, April 10. Former U.S. Secretary of Commerce and ship’s sponsor Penny Pritzker authenticated the keel for the 10th Independence variant of the littoral combat ship class during the ceremony. While keel laying traditionally represents the formal start of a ship's construction, advanced modular shipbuilding allows fabrication of the ship to begin months in advance. Today, keel laying continues to symbolically recognize the joining of the ship's components and the ceremonial beginning of the ship.

Builder’s sea trials test the ship’s systems, components and compartments at sea for the first time. The trials also include high-speed runs and demonstrate many of the carrier’s other capabilities.
