"CAMCOPTER S100" UAV tests were held last week off Lorient onboard the new French Navy OPV L'Adroit. Developed by the Austrian company "Schiebel," this versatile UAV can fly a mission as planned, without any operator action. Its positioning systems (GPS and inertial) guarantee a level of precise navigation and stability, necessary conditions for a landing on a platform at sea.

NASHUA, New Hampshire —The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps recently successfully fired the first shots of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS) from a UH-1Y helicopter, in preparation for fielding in 2012. The successful shots, which took place at Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division in China Lake, California, Sept. 9-13, mark the start of APKWS testing on the UH-1Y, and are part of the program’s low-rate initial production phase.

Paris successively deployed four nuclear-powered Attack Submarine (SSN) in that theater, one of which making two deployments. Boeing on Nov. 3 received a $1.7 billion low-rate initial production (LRIP) award from the U.S. Navy for seven additional P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft.LRIP-II is the follow-on to an initial LRIP-I contract awarded in January to provide six Poseidon aircraft. Overall, the Navy plans to purchase 117 Boeing 737-based P-8A anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft to replace its P-3 fleet.

The MH-60 program recorded another milestone recently when the first two Foreign Military Sale MH-60S, or “Sierra,” helicopters began their journey to the Royal Thai Navy. The helicopters began the first leg of their journey to Thailand with a “fly off” on August 8 from Lockheed Martin’s facility in Owego, N.Y. They flew to the Port of Baltimore in Maryland, where they were eventually shipped to Thailand and entered operational status today.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has started work outfitting the U.S. Navy's MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned helicopter with a weapons system. South Korea and Japan will hold a biennial joint naval exercise this weekend to promote military exchanges and friendship, the Navy here said Monday. The Navy and Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force will hold their seventh annual Search and Rescue Exercise, or SAREX, this Saturday and Sunday. The exercise will be held off the east coast of Busan, some 450 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The first SAREX was held in 1999.

The German navy has decided to retire early the Type 143A fast patrol boats (FPBs) Nerz and Dachs and the Type 333 minehunters Kulmbach and Laboe on 31 March 2012.The boats were already taken out of use last spring and their crews made available for other vessels. The boats are over 20 years old, with the Nerz having entered service on 14 July 1983, the Dachs on 22 March 1984, the Laboe on 7 December 1989 and the Kulmbach on 23 May 1990.

The first five P-3C Orion antisubmarine warfare (ASW) and maritime surveillance aircraft modified with enhanced networking capability have been delivered to the U.S. Navy. The C4 (command, control, communications and computers) for ASW program and other upgrades of the four-engine Lockheed Martin turboprop are designed to bridge the capability gap with the P-3’s replacement, the Boeing P-8A Poseidon, which is scheduled to enter service in 2013.

By 2027, Russia will have two new nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, one in the Northern Fleet and one in the Pacific Fleet. After years of discussions whether or not Russia needs large aircraft-carrying vessels or can cope with nuclear-powered submarines and cruisers, the admirals now have chosen an “American” fleet model consisting of vessel groups with an aircraft carrier in the center. DCNS and Thales today announced the launch of a supplementary phase for the Technology Demonstration of a system for automatic landing and deck-landing of UAVs (D2AD), which has just been notified by the French Defence Procurement Authority (DGA). Sea trials of the demonstrator are planned for 2012 using a French Navy frigate and a Boeing, H-6U Unmanned Little Bird rotorcraft.

A contract on the supply of advanced Russian anti-ship missiles to Syria is being implemented, head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation Mikhail Dmitriyev said on Wednesday.

ATK announced that it has been awarded a $54.4-million contract by the U.S. Navy for a third lot of low-rate initial production (LRIP) Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missiles (AARGM). The contract authorizes production of AARGM missiles and associated support equipment for the U.S. Navy and Italian Air Force.

United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) and the Russian Defense Ministry have agreed on prices for the Yasen and Borey class nuclear-powered submarines, a defense industry source said on Tuesday.The ministry and the USC have been wrangling over the prices of the Borey (Project 955) and Yasen (Project 885) submarines and other major contracts for several months.
