Canada launches design phase of future Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) with Irving Shipbuilding
 
Irving Shipbuilding welcomed the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, and the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence to Halifax Shipyard today to mark the start of the Definition (Design) phase of work for the first set of new naval combat vessels for Canada, the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS).

HMS Ambush attack submarine (SSN) officially welcomed into the Royal Navy
 
HMS Ambush has officially joined the Royal Navy fleet following a ceremony. The nuclear-powered submarine arrived at her home port of HM Naval Base Clyde in September last year where she has been undergoing sea trials before entering operational service later this year.
HMS Ambush, the Royal Navy’s most advanced attack submarine was commissioned into the Royal Navy to become “Her Majesty’s Ship” during a ceremony overseen by the submarine’s crew, Naval Base, workers and around 500 invited guests. MS Ambush has officially joined the Royal Navy fleet following a ceremony. The nuclear-powered submarine arrived at her home port of HM Naval Base Clyde in September last year where she has been undergoing sea trials before entering operational service later this year.

Fincantieri’s shipyard in Riva Trigoso starts work on the sixth vessel in the FREMM program
 
Yesterday, at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Riva Trigoso (Sestri Levante, Genoa), there was the ceremony to mark the cutting of the first sheeting for the sixth Fremm vessel. This is a further step in the European Multi Mission Frigate construction program, the most important joint initiative to date among European industries in the Naval Defence field.

US Navy funds Austal LCS Team to build two more Independence class Littoral Combat Ships
 
Austal USA’s order backlog has grown by approximately US$681.7 million as a result of two additional Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) contract options being exercised by the United States Navy. The contract options fund construction of the LCS 14 and LCS 16, the fifth and sixth ships in the 10-ship block buy award made to an Austal-led team in December 2010. That 10-ship program is potentially worth over US$3.5 billion.

Effective 21st-century warfare requires the ability to conduct airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and strike mobile targets anywhere, around the clock. Current technologies, however, have their limitations. Helicopters are relatively limited in the distance and flight time. Fixed-wing manned and unmanned aircraft can fly farther and longer but require either aircraft carriers or large, fixed land bases with runways often longer than a mile.

USNS Montford Point mobile landing platform ship (T-MLP 1) Christened in San Diego
 
The US Navy's first mobile landing platform ship, USNS Montford Point (T-MLP 1), was christened at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, March 2. Owned and operated by Military Sealift Command, Montford Point was christened by its sponsor, Alexis "Jackie" Bolden, the wife of current NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

First Type 056 Corvette delivered to Chinese Navy (PLAN)
