The Royal Navy Type 45 Destroyer HMS Defender has joined the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle ready to support operations against the Islamic State (IS). The Type 45 air defence destroyer met the aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean to strengthen the French ship’s ability to conduct air strikes against the terrorist organisation in Iraq and Syria.

The Secretary of State for Defence, the Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP has announced a £13.5m contract to BAE Systems for 60 new Pacific 24 Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) during a visit to Portsmouth Naval Base. This next generation Pacific 24 Mark-4 will be deployed on Royal Navy ships such as the Off Shore Patrol Vessels, as well as the new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers due to arrive in Portsmouth in 2017. The RIBs are the workhorse of the Royal Navy, deploying from ship or shore at speeds of up to 38 knots (44mph) as a rapid response craft to perform fast rescue, anti-piracy and counter-narcotics missions.

Austal Limited (Austal) is pleased to announce it has entered into a shipbuilding contract with the National Australia Bank to construct two further Cape Class Patrol Boats. The contract value is $63 million. The two vessels will be delivered to the National Australia Bank in mid-CY2017 and subsequently chartered to the Commonwealth of Australia (Department of Defence) for a minimum term of three years.

Two C13B Corvettes Delivered to Bangladesh Navy by Chinese Shipyard
 
Two C13B Corvettes, BNS Shadhinota (F111) and BNS Prottoy (F112), were delivered to the Bangladesh Navy at the China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company (CSOC)'s Wuchang Shipyard in Wuhan, China. CSOC is part of the part of the State Shipbuilding Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC). The C13B-class of corvette is based on the Type 056 Jiangdao class in use with the PLAN.

According to the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) the third Type 052D (NATO reporting name Luyang III class) destroyer Hefei (hull number 174), was just commissioned on December 12 with China's South Sea Fleet. The vessel is now homeported at Yulin Naval Base located in the Yalong Bay (city of Sanya) on Hainan island.

The French Navy also announced that the CSG crossed the Suez canal and is underway towards the Persian Gulf.
